View Vacancy - Climate Change Policy Manager
Main purpose of job:
To coordinate the British Embassy San Jose’s work on climate change, particularly on policy and action to support delivery of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in the UK in November 2021.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
- To coordinate implementation of the climate elements of the Country Business Plan, working closely with political, communications, Department of Trade and regional colleagues. This will include ensuring that the delivery of COP26 objectives supports long-term decarbonisation and resilience & adaptation objectives in Costa Rica eg. on clean growth, nature-based solutions and green finance.
- To coordinate with UK government department colleagues on engagement with Costa Rica, advising on local priorities and challenges; including briefing for ministers and senior officials.
- To liaise with officials in the Costa Rican government, particularly in the Ministry of Environment & Energy on the policy and operational elements of delivering COP26. This will include advising on and supporting engagement between senior officials, including the Ambassador, and Ministers.
- To promote the UK’s key climate strategies, climate change policy and low carbon capabilities to key the Costa Rican public, private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations, academic and civil society stakeholders.
- To work on Ministerial and official visits relating to UK climate engagement in Cost Rica. This could include planning and advising on visit agendas, coordinating with media colleagues, and supporting events as required.
- To hold a corporate responsibility (eg delivering Bandera Azul qualification) that contributes to the successful development of a sustainable Embassy environment in collaboration with the Corporate Service Team.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, for instance, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Relations, Climate and Environment Science, etc.
- A minimum of 2+ years of experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or regional government, international organizations or agencies, preferably in climate change.
- Strong understanding of international climate change policy, with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.
- Language: fluent written and spoken English and Spanish.
- Level of language required: minimum level required C1 under the CEFRL or equivalent).
- Knowledge or experience of project management and relevant skills.
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field.
This is a full-time, fixed-term/temporary role.
The current contract will end 31 March 2022.
Jobholder will have flexible and remote working available.
Must have the legal status to live and work in Costa Rica.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
