Public Diplomacy

Main purpose of job:

The work of the intern to the British Consulate in Recife will focus on five areas: consulate administration, delivering events, political analysis, renewable energy trade support and managing the consul’s diary. In order to perform these roles, the intern will have the support of the Consul and the Trade and Investment Team in Recife, as well as from Her Majesty’s Government colleagues from other posts in Brazil.

The intern will work directly with the consul on the majority of issues covered by the consulate. The candidate will also have space to be independent and work on their own projects or with colleagues outside of the consulate in Recife.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Specifically, the intern will be expected to:

· produce political analysis in the build-up to the elections, which will go toward producing political commentary to be read by Brasilia and London. Therefore, it is extremely beneficial for the intern to have a strong interest in Brazilian politics.

· support the consul and the Trade and Investment team in improving the accessibility of UK renewable energy companies in the northeast of Brazil.

· organise any in-person or virtual events that the consulate may hold.

· make sure that the consulate office space is well maintained, including liaising with suppliers and coordinating with the financial department in the embassy.

· organise the consul's agenda to ensure that travel and meetings are booked efficiently.

We are an extremely technologically prepared consulate and foreign government, meaning that many of our internal meetings are carried out via MS Teams. As the consulate covers the northeast region, it is common to carry-out external meetings via MS Teams also.

Essential on arrival:

  • Interest in Brazilian politics.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook and Teams.

Desirable:

  • Interest in Renewable energy.
  • Interest in international trade.

An intern in the British Consulate in Recife has many opportunities to work on important issues and events across Brazil with colleagues from other consulates and the embassy. These working groups can cover topics such as diversity, gender, learning and development, climate, mental health and more.

The intern will also have access to courses and workshops provided by the British government in Brazil.

You will be expected to go to the consulate on average two days per week. The rest of the time will be working from home. The number of days you will be needed in the consulate may vary.

The consulate in Recife is the ideal place for those who want to be challenged and develop. As an intern you are expected to get many things wrong, to learn and to improve. Your point of view will be as welcome and important as the views of other staff and your contributions will be valued equally. As a small team of six staff, the consulate often lends a hand on the projects of colleagues when necessary. You will therefore have the chance to be involved in diverse areas such as development aid, tech and inclusion and trade and investment.

The internship is offered on a six-month contract, which can be extended three times.

Since you will be speaking with colleagues from the UK it is desirable that you speak English. In order to increase the diversity of the pool of candidates who are able to apply, we only require an intermediate level of English upon starting the role.

We do not have any preference for the ideal candidate. Everyone who is able to deliver on the above is welcome to apply and will be treated equally.

Please be aware that you will only be able to apply to vacancies for Country Based Staff roles with the British Government through this official tal.net site (operated by Oleeo). Jobs may be advertised on third party websites, however our adverts will always link back to the official tal.net site.
