Background

The British Consulate-General in Chicago diplomatically represents the UK in 14 states throughout the Midwest. The Consulate is responsible for: developing trade and investment relations between the Midwest and UK, public diplomacy efforts, and Consular services for British nationals. We are offering an internship with the Prosperity and Politics, Press & Public Affairs (PPA) teams, responsible for handling public diplomacy on a range of issues.

Students studying politics, economics, journalism or international affairs can gain valuable real-world experience in their fields. The Consulate’s internship program allows students to be part of a fast-paced environment at the center of the crucial UK-US transatlantic relationship.


Duties and Responsibilities

• Learn how to monitor, analyse, and brief UK Government officials on political, economic, and legislative developments in the Midwestern United States

• Research media and provide support on digital engagement for the Communications Team

• Learn how to coordinate visits to the Midwest by senior members of the UK Government

• Help preparing special events, programmes, and visit logistics for the Consulate

• Learn about responding and analysing requests from the public for basic information on the UK

  • Must be a junior or a senior in an undergraduate program, or enrolled in a graduate program by the start date of your internship (least 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework completed). Since this is an unpaid internship, students must receive college credit in exchange for their internships.

  • Have working knowledge of – and interest in – the politics of the Midwestern United States

  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word and Excel Have very strong writing and research skills

  • Be literate in the use of digital engagement tools in a professional environment (familiarity with Photoshop and design applications is also a plus)
  • Be a resourceful asset in a professional office environment

This program offers internships for 15-25 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. These are unpaid internships, for college credit only, but the Embassy does provide a stipend of $100 per month for transportation costs. This internship will start on 13 January 2020 and end on 10 April 2020.

Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders, A or J1 Visa holders with valid Work Authorization Document. If you hold a Visa other than an A or J1 Visa you are not currently eligible to work at the Embassy. All candidates will be subject to background checks and security clearance. Successful applicants will need to provide confirmation that they will be earning college credit as part of this internship.
