The British Embassy in Berlin is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Department for International Trade (DIT) is seeking to appoint a Project & Campaign Manager Europe (PME) based in Berlin, to support work across DIT’s Europe Region. 

This is a full-time role, however, we are open to also consider part-time arrangements (for example 25h per week) for suitably qualified candidates. Please state your preference clearly in your application.

Within UK Government, the Department for International Trade (DIT) is responsible for securing the UK’s and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade.

We negotiate international trade policy, promote British trade across the world, secure and improve the economic well-being and stability of the UK, and help to create tens of thousands of jobs every year.

Led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Europe, DIT Europe Region team has a presence in 32 countries. DIT Europe is one of the nine global regions and part of an overseas network that operates in 108 countries.

Working as a member of the DIT Europe Region’s Chief Operating Officer’s Core Team, with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) based in Berlin, the job holder will take ownership of specific regional projects or broader project priorities. The Chief Operating Officer’s Core Team is responsible for DIT Europe Region’s smooth functioning, ensuring that DIT Europe staff are best equipped and least distracted to focus on their delivery priorities. Functional areas owned by the Core Team include resourcing, both in terms of budgets and people, providing project management capabilities to the region, internal operational communications, as well as evaluating and reporting performance, driving strategic and operational planning, and supporting the development of our digital tools. As part of all of this, maintaining close cooperation with colleagues in DIT’s Headquarters in London is vital.  

The successful candidate will take ownership of projects in support of corporate and operational work, bringing strong numerical and analytical skills to the team in support of developing our performance analysis and finance/budget functions. Ideally, the role holder will also bring relevant experience and interest to evolve and maintain DIT Europe’s Learning and Development Offer.

The job holder will support another PME colleague with project managing two of regional campaign priorities in “Clean Growth” and “Technology & AI” and should be willing to travel regularly within Europe (not usually more than once or twice per month for one or two nights).

Roles and responsibilities:

Project Management in a complex web of stakeholders:

  • Make use of appropriate project management methodologies to lead selected projects and initiatives on behalf of the Chief Operating Officer, across DIT Europe including supporting project management for our Regional Umbrella Campaigns in Clean Growth and in Technology & AI;

  • Learning & Development and Data Analysis, of both financial and delivery data;

  • As part of the above, provide briefings, presentations and data-driven analysis on relevant issues and policies to support senior management’s decision making;

  • Project manage significant elements of the annual DIT business planning process in Europe;

  • Maintain the risk register on behalf of the Chief Operating Officer.

     

Relationship management:

  • Partner with the wider DIT Europe Core Team as well as delivery staff to support the continuing development of DIT Europe, ideally anticipating areas for action before issues arise;

  • Leverage the existing partnership and maintain active communication with Headquarters teams (HQ) in London as relevant to project role.

     

Organisational support and Line Management:

  • Provide support where necessary in delivery of the wider objectives of the DIT Europe team, including on cross-cutting issues and interactions;

  • Promote and contribute to the DIT Europe business plan and network values, actively and constructively participating in Post activities.


  • Proficiency in English and German (both written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework*);

  • A university degree on a relevant field or equivalent;

  • At least 2-3 years of proven experience in project management;

  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel;

  • Previous working experience in an international environment;

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including written and verbal presentation and communication skills;

  • Ability to work across teams and stakeholders based across multiple locations;

  • Strong organisational and time management skills;

  • Self-Starter – proactive with the ability to work well on own initiative;

  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team;

  • Ability to pay strong attention to detail and accuracy.



  • Project Management methodology (e.g. Agile, Prince2, etc.) and experience of how to best apply these in a bespoke manner fitting the circumstances;

  • Financial management and budgeting experience at scale;

  • Knowledge of Oracle based accounting packages and accounting, budgeting or book-keeping experience;

  • Previous experience of working within Government would be an advantage;

  • Experience of working in a Learning & Development role and/or Human Resources;

  • Knowledge of more than two european languages would be valuable.

This is a fixed-term position for a contract period of two years, with the possibility of renewal by mutual agreement.

The gross yearly salary for a full-time position is €59,304 rising to a maximum of approx €66,616 gross per annum after a qualifying period in addition to performance related pay (salary is not negotiable). Working hours per week are 37,5 net.

The gross yearly salary for a part-time position would be calculated on a pro-rata basis. 

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance. The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorization for Germany in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Germany are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
