The British Embassy, Sofia is offering an internship opportunity in its Political Team beginning in October 2016.

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

The Embassy is looking to recruit a motivated intern with good analytical and project management skills, and the ability to work well independently. The successful candidate will sit with the Political Team. Areas of work will include:

  • Migration: Analysis of and reporting on the migration crisis. Contribution to a migration project;
  • Commercial Diplomacy: Analysis of legislation in the Bulgarian economic sector that directly impacts UK business. Work with the Commercial Diplomacy attaché to deliver a plan of action to benefit UK business;
  • Internal Politics: Development of background documents that help the team to understand Bulgaria and its politics ahead of the presidential elections;
  • Work on ad-hoc work requests from across the team.

The internship provides the intern with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the wider work of the Embassy. There will be opportunities to attend high level meetings with Embassy staff. 

  • Excellent command of English and Bulgarian;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Excel;
  • Good communication and organisational skills;
  • Knowledge of and interest in Bulgarian politics.

This is a full-time position (36 hours per week) for a minimum commitment of three months, which could be extended by mutual agreement. Flexible working hours, negotiable with the respective Line Manager, are possible.

The successful candidates will receive a monthly salary of BGN 420 as well as BGN 50 transport allowance per month throughout the duration of the internship.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. Anyone with right of residence and employment in Bulgaria may apply, including all EU/EEA citizens and the family members of EU/EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Bulgaria.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to Bulgarian employment law.
