Main purpose of job:

The Executive Officer, Migration in Harare will work to the Migration Delivery Officer in Pretoria, and be responsible for the implementation and administration of the migration agenda at the British Embassy in Harare. They will work in close co-ordination with UK Home Office, British Embassy personnel and key Zimbabwean contacts to deliver agreements regarding migration made between the Government of Zimbabwe and the Government of the UK.  They will also play an active role in wider embassy life and ensuring Home Office priorities are recognised throughout the embassy.

Roles & Responsibilities

Engagement 50%

  • You will be expected to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, utilising these relationships to promote the work of the migration team within the British Embassy and externally to ensure the achievement of the UK migration agenda.
  • Ensure the continued implementation of our bilateral Returns Agreement by establishing, developing and maintaining productive working relationships with a network of key contacts within MFA and suitable host authorities in order to ensure a collaborative working relationship.
  • More widely, the role carries a liaison function with other interested groups and organisations on the migration agenda including other Embassies in Zimbabwe, Migration Officers at other British missions overseas, NGOs and other organisations who have an overall impact on the general success of the migration work in Zimbabwe.

Assisting with Returns 25%

  • Assist with the management of the returns process to Zimbabwe this includes all logistics and liaison with the Zimbabwean government and UK as required.  
  • Assisting the Migration Delivery Officer to ensure that the Zimbabwean authorities are provided with the correct notice for any returns, including liaising with Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Liaising with Zimbabwean stakeholders to ensure that pre-arrival administration is completed ahead of returns.

Wider Home Office work and Project Management 15%

  • You will be expected to oversee migration projects, ensuring agreed outcomes are delivered in accordance with UK Government financial and project management principals and guidelines. You will be expected to report to colleagues within the British Embassy and to Home Office and FCDO officials on impact of the projects and performance.

Administration 10%

  • Arranging all travel, site visits and meeting requirements for the Migration Delivery Officer, and for inward and outward visits.
  • Carrying out office filing and maintenance of the filing system, maintaining contact lists, taking and circulating meeting notes.
  • Provision of cover for the MDO during absences. 
  • Support the wider embassy as part of the crisis team and when required.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, or minimum of seven years’ work experience in a relevant field
  • Minimum of three years’ work experience
  • Strong understanding of the impact of political, economic, and social factors on migration.
  • Excellent understanding of the current political, social and economic context in Zimbabwe
  • Experience of engaging with Government of Zimbabwe Ministers and officials.
  • Experience working with international partners
  • Strong organisational and time management skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Commitment to values and ethics, integrity, reliability and discretion.
  • Experience of working in an embassy or international organisation
  • Previous professional knowledge and work experience in the field of migration
  • Existing relationships within the field

  • The successful applicant will be remotely managed by the Migration Delivery Officer who is based in South Africa.
