UKMIS (UK Mission to the United Nations)

The UK Mission in Geneva is looking for a highly motivated Intern to support the UK Ambassador for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The selected intern will assist on a range of administrative and policy tasks, including effective planning and support for the Ambassador’s official engagements.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to participate in the UK Mission’s Human Rights work as an integral part of the UK delegation. The internship will offer a chance to learn about the Foreign and Commonwealth Office while working alongside the UK Ambassador for Human Rights engaging with a range of international stakeholders, including UN agencies, NGOs and Civil Society. 

Main roles and responsibilities:

  • Attending meetings with the Ambassador for Human Rights, covering a range of topics and providing timely and accurate reporting.
  • Supporting the coordination of the Ambassador’s visit programmes to countries around the world.
  • Information management including: record keeping, file management, maintaining contact databases and updating planning documents.
  • Assisting in the coordination of briefing ahead of stakeholder meetings.
  • Drafting official correspondence on human rights related issues on behalf of the Ambassador for Human Rights and DPR.  
  • Organising events hosted by the Ambassador.
  • Supporting diary and logistical management for the Ambassador.
  • Play a lead role in supporting the social media accounts of the Ambassador, including creating content, infographics and visuals in order to maintain a strong online presence.
  • Carrying out background research on human rights and other related issues when required.
  • Supporting the Human Rights team on a range of tasks when required, such as covering meetings and side-events at the 51st session of the Human Rights Council in September 2022
  • Fluency at C2 level in English according to CEFR Framework
  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Accurate and clear written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work with all seniorities.
  • Very good computer skills (Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Good experience using social media for professional purposes. 
  • Fluency at B1 level in French according to CEFR Framework
  • Prior work experience in a multilateral setting or international organisation

Internship will be for a period of 6 months with the possibility of extension to 11 months.

All applicants should have permission to live and work in Switzerland. Applicants must hold a full passport valid for at least 18 months for any EU / Schengen country.

United Kingdom, European Union and EFTA nationals do not require visa sponsorship along with Nationals of: Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Principality of Andorra, Principality of Monaco, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican.

The UK Mission will offer the intern a monthly training allowance of 1,450 CHF. Please note that interns will need to arrange and pay for their own travel and accommodation, as well as any other living costs and are subject to Swiss taxes.

This Where applicable, we encourage successful applicants to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) prior to entering Switzerland.

The Mission offers a contribution to the payment of travel insurance for the duration of internship, in place of Private Swiss Health Insurance that includes health & accident cover for all interns.

The final appointment and commencement of internship will be dependent upon successful security clearance.
