The British Embassy in Germany is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Communications Officer to work in Press and Media Team.

Main Purpose of Job:

  • To support strategic communications for the Germany network, on classic (including trade and specialist) media as well as social media platforms;
  • To be able to run independent campaigns, prepare for press events, and accompany the Ambassador and senior management or visiting ministers on media calls;
  • To provide media handling at internal and external events, to place op eds and interviews and recruit suitable journalists for briefings;
  • To provide support on internal communications, crisis response and broader corporate objectives.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Classic media work in support of Embassy/Network priorities: especially on soft power and prosperity issues;
  • Set up and manage briefings, interviews and events;
  • Draft press releases and media invites, provide content for use on social media channels;
  • Compile media distribution lists and contacts;
  • Press/media handling around Ministerial and Royal visits; and multilateral events (e.g. G20) held in Germany. Including support on accreditation lists, media logistics and transcription of visitors’ media interventions;
  • Plan strategic communication for Consul General Munich, with a focus on trade & investment promotion. Provide a link between the Embassy communication strategy and the Consulate General;
  • To support the Head of Communications & Bilateral Relations Section in shaping internal communications across the UK Government’s Germany network;
  • The officer will also be expected to support broader Network corporate objectives: e.g. by taking part in our Reception cover and crisis response rosters.

 

  • Fluent German and English (both written and spoken);
  • Social Media competence (FB, twitter, Instagram);
  • Journalistic or broader communications experience;
  • Writing skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Project management skills;
  • Editorial work experience.

This is a full-time position of five working days 37.5 hours net per week, for an initial contract period of two years, which may be extended by mutual agreement.

The jobholder will become part of the British Government’s presence in Germany, which aims to support and foster them and their work.

The British Embassy in Berlin has a strong ethos of Learning and Development, including our Learning and Development Week. In addition, there will be many opportunities to attend external seminars and events on relevant issues. This is in addition to the induction programme offered to all Embassy staff.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to be actively involved in the corporate life of the Embassy, contributing to the wider objectives of the British Government’s Germany network and supporting the Embassy’s positive working environment.


The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.
