The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for the position of Consular Assistant, based in Lanzarote.

The British Consulate in Las Palmas protects and promotes the interests of approximately 2.9 million British visitors who visit the Consular district each year and over 25,000 British residents who live there. The Consular district includes Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The core of the job will involve attending to members of the public applying for emergency travel documents, managing appointments, and ensuring the Consular Officers in Las Palmas have all the necessary back up information to enable them to issue the emergency travel documents.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

  • To attend customers applying for emergency travel documents, and processing their application forms.
  • To perform ad hoc general administrative duties.
  • 2-3 years of work experience.
  • Proven experience in dealing with the general public and working in a team in a fast moving target-driven environment.
  • Self-motivation to work alone remotely.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
  • Superb attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Self starter with strong time management skills - able to work to deadlines and targets and manage a sometimes heavy workload.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills –Fluency in both English and Spanish (C2 level).Language level will be tested during the interview.
  • (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel) are important as you will be working remotely
  • Administration background will be preferred.

Terms and Conditions

This is a part-time permanent position. The working hours are 12 hrs per week. Occasionally some flexibility will be expected (up to three additional hours per week).

The gross monthly salary is € 520.15 at a locally engaged A1 level.

The successful candidate will be subject to a confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and a successful completion of a probationary period of 3 months.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy/Consulate based on gross annual salary.

Regarding taxation, the Consulate in Las Palmas is part of the British Mission in Spain, and as such supervised by the British Embassy. The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of Spanish income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
