This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to deliver UK objectives for NATO partnerships.  Working in collaboration with 27 other Allies, partner delegations and NATO’s International Staff, you will help implement the decisions of the NATO Warsaw Summit on the future of NATO’s partnerships in Europe, the Middle East & North Africa, and around the world.  You will represent the UK in committee discussion of these partnerships with Allies and with the partners themselves; focussing particularly on partnership plans, partnership cooperation activities and other support for those partners.

 

 Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work to deliver on Partnership Interoperability Initiative tasking agreed at the Wales Summit. This includes through making a leading contribution to partnership policy development and sustaining UK thought leadership on this dossier at NATO;
  • Work to deliver UK objectives on partnerships adaptation, as part of the wider political adaptation of the Alliance. This includes securing sufficient Ministerial attention to drive the agenda;
  • Lead on political consultation and military cooperation with the Euro-Atlantic Partnership (EAP), the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD), Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI), NATO’s partners across the Globe and other nations interacting with the Alliance;
  • Preparing for and representing the UK in working-level discussions of relevant partnerships in NATO’s Partnerships and Collective Security Committee and Military Working Group for Cooperation, negotiating with Allies and partners to help achieve UK objectives;
  • Establish and maintain contact with stakeholders in NATO, Allies’ and partners’ delegations, UK Government departments and the UK’s network of embassies;
  • Draft timely, accurate reports of committee meetings, sessions of the North Atlantic Council, Ministerial meetings and other events as necessary;
  • Provide succinct, targeted advice and briefing to the UK Permanent Representative, Military Representative and other colleagues as required. Contribute to Ministerial and CHODs briefings coordinated by London. Contribute to the Team’s political analysis.

  • Experience of working with a wide network of contacts demonstrating lobbying and influencing skills;
  • Good communication skills (written and oral);
  • Strong interpersonal and customer focus skills;
  • Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate them simply and effectively.
  • Excellent drafting skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and contribute to its outputs;
  • Good organisational skills;
  • Adaptability under pressure;
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of NATO and UK Government institutions and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa, and of wider global strategic and security issues;
  • Understanding of written and spoken French and/or Arabic.

This is a full-time, four year fixed-term contract, for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

The monthly salary for this position is €2.736,57 (B3 Level), plus an additional allowance of €327 gross per month. Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

 

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
