The UK Permanent Representation to the EU (UKRep) in Brussels is part of a world-wide network of 230 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now is looking for a Deputy Antici.

On 29 March 2019, the UK will leave the EU and UKRep will become a Third Country Mission to the EU.  While the nature of UKRep’s work will change, it will remain a significant and busy UK overseas Mission as we work to establish a close future partnership with the EU.  Given this evolving context, we are looking for an individual who is prepared to be flexible and adjust their responsibilities as required.

The Deputy Antici will provide high quality efficient policy co-ordination, well judged advice and administrative support to the UK Permanent Representative, the Antici and wider Private Office and UKRep teams in respect of COREPER II, European Council and General Affairs Council business.

Post exit, the role will flex to wider support as a member of the small Private Office team to the Permanent Representative, dealing with legacy issues from membership and engagement as a third country mission with the EU27, working in partnership with the UKRep engagement and comms hub.

Main Roles and responsibilities:

1) Co-ordinate and prepare COREPER and Antici meetings including coordinating, preparing briefing and reporting of the weekly meetings of Ambassadors:

  • To co-ordinate, prepare, advise on handling, and on occasion draft, briefings and documents for COREPER II and Antici to tight and evolving deadlines;

  • Represent the UK at Antici working group when the Antici cannot attend;

  • Acting as point of contact for UKREP staff on COREPER II issues, providing advice and guidance;

  • Working closely with the teams across the UK Permanent Representation to ensure that the UK’s participation in COREPER is effective and ensure the systems to do so are fit for purpose.

2) Organisation and support for the General Affairs Council and the European Council:

  • Work closely with colleagues in DExEU and the FCO in coordinating and preparing the briefing and programme for the General Affairs Council; 
  • Arrange bilateral and other meetings with external contacts for the GAC;

  • Lead in supporting preparation of the GAC and European Council in COREPER as necessary;

  • Provide policy and administrative support on the day of the General Affairs Council.

3) Support for the wider team:

  • Arranging and commissioning briefing for meetings of the Permanent Representative with other Ambassadors;

  • Maintaining oversight of the A/I points process for Councils and COREPER, with the I/A points assistant;

  • Ad hoc cover to provide support to Private Office and the Permanent Representative on a range of other tasks as required, including cover where necessary to support team resilience.


  • Fluent command of English (spoken and written);
  • EU expertise;
  • Relevant University Degree;
  • 3-5 years of work experience in a relevant field;
  • Proactive approach;
  • Clear and effective communication skills;
  • Proven organization skills with the ability to deal with pressure and fast paced work;
  • Experience in solving complex and sometimes sensitive problems around both procedural and policy issues;
  • Ability to work with contacts and colleagues (UKRep/London) at all levels;
  • Good team working ability;
  • Ability to provide a good customer service.
  • Willing to work out of hours on ocassion, when required.
  • Good knowledge of French (spoken and written) or other European language;
  • Office administration.

This is a full-time permanent contract, for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is €3,865.40, B3(L) level (The British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium salaries are not subject to annual indexation).

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
