The British Embassy in Brussels is part of a world-wide network of 230 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is currently looking for a Senior Trade Adviser within DIT.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government organisation that helps UK-based companies to succeed in Belgium and other international markets. DIT also assists overseas companies to bring high-quality investment to the UK’s economy.

As part of a small team within a global network, the job holder will directly support British companies in the pursuit of commercial opportunities in Belgium. Main objectives are to increase UK exports, scout export opportunities, extend the Embassy business contact portfolio and help British companies win business with a primary focus on Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), retail and healthcare but also covering other business sectors when required.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Providing professional advice and support to UK companies wishing to develop business in Belgium, focusing primarily on the FMCG, retail and healthcare but also covering other sectors when required;

  • Conceptualise, plan and execute high-impact business development and marketing activities such as company visits, trade missions, buyer visits, tastings and retail partnerships, highlighting the strengths of the UK’s sector propositions and ultimately increasing UK exports;

  • Scouting and identifying commercial opportunities, matching and introducing UK suppliers into these market opportunities;

  • Maintaining and expanding a network of commercial partners and multipliers in Belgium as well as in the UK;

  • Attending relevant events both in Belgium and in neighbouring countries as required;

  • Contributing to the work of the commercial team, ensuring the delivery of team targets and contributing to the wider economic diplomacy agenda of the British Embassy.

  • Fluently spoken and written English, Dutch and French;

  • A self-starter, demonstrating a flexible, pro-active and entrepreneurial attitude;

  • A strong team player with good people skills, strong ability to network and interact;

  • Good customer relationship management skills;

  • Ability to prioritise, effectively manage and execute multiple and competing tasks within the agreed deadlines;

  • Full proficiency in MS Office applications and use of social media.

  • Understanding of the UK and Belgian business scenes;

  • Knowledge or previous work experience in the following sectors: consumer goods, food and drink, retail or healthcare;

  • Experience of dealing with business in an international context;

  • Experience in business development.

This is a permanent full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. Although the appointment is for an indefinite period, it is expected that the overall period of service will most probably not exceed 1 year. This point will be addressed during the recruitment process.

The monthly gross salary for this position is € 4,058.62 B3 (L) level.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

Visa/passport requirements: Must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
