NATO is the world’s most successful military alliance, and has been at the heart of the United Kingdom’s defence for 70 years. The United Kingdom's Joint Delegation to NATO is the link between the UK Government and NATO. The Delegation’s principal roles are to promote British interests in NATO and to keep UK Ministers and government departments informed about NATO discussions. Its work is valued highly by FCO and Ministries of Defence (MOD) alike and we are now looking for a NATO Partnerships Officer.

The job holder will work in a delegation dealing with the largest range of challenges NATO has faced since the end of the Cold War, facing threats from state and non-state actors whilst adapting to modern forms of conflict.  Working within the Political Section, the job holder will work to deliver UK objectives for NATO’s partnerships with 41 countries. They will work in collaboration with 28 other Allies, partner delegations and NATO’s International Staff, to help implement the decisions of recent NATO Summits on the future of NATO’s partnerships in Europe, the Middle East & North Africa, and around the world, representing the UK in committee discussion of these partnerships with Allies and with the partners themselves. The job holder will drive forward reform efforts to improve coherence and efficiency in NATO’s partnership agenda.

As with all jobs in the Delegation, we promote an adaptable and responsive approach, which means the job holder will need to be ready to adapt their focus to deal with changing circumstances and priorities. The job holder will be a strong team player. They can expect, for example, to assist the Delegation’s preparations for the December 2019 Leaders Meeting in London. We can ensure that it will be fast moving and enjoyable, with plenty of scope for policy development and delivery.

Main Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Lead on political consultation and military cooperation with the Euro-Atlantic Partnership (EAP), the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD), Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI), NATO’s partners across the Globe and other nations interacting with the Alliance;
  • Making a leading contribution to UK thought leadership on this dossier at NATO. Work to deliver UK objectives on partnerships;

  • Preparing for and representing the UK in working-level discussions of relevant partnerships in NATO’s Partnerships and Cooperative Security Committee, negotiating with Allies and partners to help achieve UK objectives;
  • Provide succinct, targeted advice and briefing to the UK Permanent Representative, Military Representative and other colleagues as required. Contribute to Ministerial and CHODs. Contribute to the Team’s political analysis;

  • Draft timely, accurate reports of committee meetings, sessions of the North Atlantic Council, Ministerial meetings and other events as necessary;

  • Establish and maintain contact with stakeholders in NATO, Allies’ and partners’ delegations, UK Government departments and the UK’s network of embassies;

  • Providing support and advice across Political Team and the UK Delegation, in advance of the Leaders Meeting December 2019, flexing according to changing priorities;

  • Corporate Activity to improve the Delegation’s effectiveness.


  • University Degree;
  • Relevant previous experience in Policy Work;
  • Experience of working with a wide network of contacts demonstrating lobbying and influencing skills;
  • Fluent written and spoken English;
  • Strategic thinking and good negotiation skills;
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral);
  • Strong interpersonal and customer focus skills;
  • Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate them simply and effectively;
  • Excellent drafting skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and contribute to its outputs;
  • Good organisational skills;
  • Adaptability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced role.
  • Knowledge of NATO, Multilateral Organisations and UK Government institutions and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa, and of wider global strategic and security issues;
  • Programme management experience;
  • Preexisting SC Security Clearance.

This is a full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. This position will be filled on a replacement contract to cover a leave of absence. It is anticipated that the staff member will return in January 2020. This is only a guide and any possible earlier return or extension to this date would be discussed with the successful candidate.

The monthly salary for this position is €4,058.62 B3 (L) level.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
