Applications are invited for the role of Trade Policy Officer at the British High Commission in Wellington.

The Trade Policy Officer position will be part of the newly formed Trade Policy team. The role will support work to establish the conditions for a strong bilateral trading relationship with New Zealand, by developing deep knowledge of the local market, sectors and Government priorities, supporting policy formulation in London and playing a role at Post in delivering the UK's trade policy objectives.

Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Working to the new Head of Trade Policy, this role will support the provision of policy intelligence and analysis on specific trade and investment market barriers, and use this to make evidence-based recommendations for Department of International Trade and Foreign and Commonwealth Office policy development.
  • Development of effective and productive relationships with the relevant regulators and institutions (UK and NZ).
  • Manage local influencing campaigns to gain support for UK trade policy objectives, including identifying and securing funding as appropriate.
  • Provide in depth insight into NZ's policy development issues such as trade strategy and agriculture, to ensure relevant lessons can be learns in developing UK policy. 
  • Organise and coordinate programmes for official Trade Policy visitors, including liaison with official NZ Government stakeholders.
  • Act as the Secretariat for the NZ Network's Trade Policy Group. 
  • Project work (20% of role) to develop tools and processes which can be rolled out across the New Zealand and Australia networks and ensure that projects are developed and funded according to the UK government priorities and rules. 
  • Experience of New Zealand’s trade policy architecture, history and current and policy goals;
  • Awareness of New Zealand’s agricultural sector and its role within trade agreements;
  • Familiarity with the UK’s trade policy goals following the triggering of Article 50 to begin the process of withdrawing the UK from the European Union;
  • Awareness of WTO and other international trade structures;
  • A proven track record at creating and maintaining wide and effective networks of contacts;
  • An ability to convey information accurately and concisely.  Expresses own views and contributes to team debate. 
  • Organises self and work effectively.  Makes best use of resources and maintains high work standards. 
  • Takes responsibility and uses initiative to deliver high quality work.  Handles a variety of tasks, making progress on all fronts.  Works with speed and professionalism, recognising that others depend on them. 
  • Flexibility to meet the demands of a varied work schedule. Prepared to work additional hours in support of events hosted by the High Commissioner or the British High Commission (Time Off In Lieu available).
  • Shows consideration for others needs and motivations, values diversity and inclusion, works effectively and supportively with colleagues and contacts in the immediate and wider teams.  Embraces different ways of thinking and acting and able to treat others with respect and courtesy regardless of work pressures. 
  • The jobholder will need to be adaptable to emerging organisation priorities and be called upon to assist in other portfolios as required. 

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate strengths in the competences (and provide evidence of this in previous jobs at interview).

The salary is up to NZD$80,449 per annum (paid out monthly) dependent on skills and experience plus up to 5% superannuation subsidy on a $ for $ basis. 

The British Government supports flexible working practices negotiable with your line manager.

Appointment is subject to achieving and maintaining a clean New Zealand Police records check and UK security clearance. 

Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period pursuant to section 67A of the Employment Relations Act 2000.

Open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and partners/dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in New Zealand. Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Candidates must have or be able to obtain work authorisation for New Zealand in order to apply.
