The main purpose of the job is to provide senior local leadership in the Department for International Trade Life Science, Health & Social Care (LSHSC) sectors in East China, with a focus on Life Sciences. To secure export success for UK companies, increase foreign direct investment (FDI) from China to the UK, and contribute towards the sector’s Trade Policy strategy.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Delivering strategic trade and investment opportunities

  • To support the delivery of the LSHSC strategy in East China (75% LS – 25% HSC). To secure export success through existing opportunities and projects, and management of UK Life Science & Health/Social Care Trade Missions to East China;
  • To contribute to regional and national strategy development for the sector.
  • To identify and land Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects from East China Life Science companies, looking to set up in the UK.
  • To develop a personal understanding of the key Chinese companies and organisations in East China in the LSHSC sectors, including their capability, interests, and opportunities for collaboration;
  • To work with sector colleagues around China and the UK to raise awareness of opportunities through relevant channels, and draw on their expertise and activities where they can help to support objectives.

Effective relationship management

  • To build an effective network of relationships with senior leaders in key companies and organisations in East China and the UK, including intermediaries, trade associations, and government departments, understanding their strategic intentions and business needs;
  • Foster long-term, working level government-to-government contacts, and facilitate high level engagement (e.g. Consul-General, Director General DIT) with more complex/senior relationships as appropriate; 
  • Maintain a close working relationship with sector team members in other posts, other teams, and partners.

High impact visits and events

  • To develop propositions for high level visits from UK to East China and from East China to the UK that complement and support the delivery of the LSHSC sector strategy;
  • To plan and manage the delivery and follow up of important visit programmes, engaging with key contacts in government and businesses, and other networks as appropriate. Provide timely, high-quality briefing and reports.

Policy

  • To develop a clear understanding of the barriers for UK companies seeking greater market share in the LSHSC sector.
  • To engage in particular with UK pharma and med-tech companies based and HQ’d in East China to gauge market access & trade policy needs, and contribute to DIT strategy work.

Knowledge and skills development

  • To undertake continuous learning and development, including on-the-job opportunities to deepen knowledge and understanding of the Life Science & Health/Social Care sectors, the UK capability landscape, and the regional business environment, learning from others across government and the wider teams, as well as formal training courses.

  • Life sciences or scientific base, or healthcare/market access experiences and knowledge
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Able to build a network of key contacts and stakeholders in relevant sectors
  • An experienced manager and has a strong team-working ability
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)
  • Bachelors degree or above is preferred
  • Preferably with 4-5 years working experience
  • Experience of working with Chinese government organisations.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, performance related bonus scheme, good leave entitlement and insurance plan, etc. The gross starting salary for this position before all deductions is RMB 27, 396 per month for Chinese nationals and an abated monthly salary of RMB 35, 742 per month for British Nationals and spouses/partners of all nationalities of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria. 

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22 day annual leave entitlement in pro rata. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
