Our Network
Our overseas network is made up of different government departments. Below you can find out about the government departments, the work they do overseas and the typical roles you could perform.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is a new government department responsible for promoting British interests overseas, supporting British citizens and business around the globe, building shared global prosperity, eradicating poverty, tackling climate change, strengthening the international rule of law and global security, and promoting free, open societies. Local Staff work in our Overseas Diplomatic Missions and Offices in over 160 countries, in a variety of Political, Development, Programme, Communications, Corporate and Support roles.
Local roles at the FCDO are incredibly varied and rewarding, providing a variety of learning and development opportunities.
The FCDO also delivers a modern Consular service. Our Consular services support British people around the world when they most need our help. Consular work is both rewarding and challenging. Rewarding because it gives the opportunity to make a real difference to people in distress. Challenging because you will frequently help people suffering from bereavement, imprisonment, victims of crime or accidents, and those with mental health conditions. We support our staff with comprehensive and continuous training and a wide range of wellbeing initiatives. More information on the Consular Directorate is available here.

This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade (DIT). Our aim is to promote British trade and investment across the world which is vital for the prosperity of the UK. DIT brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment in markets across the world to help businesses succeed.
DIT is building the UK’s trade capability and it is vital that we are able to attract and retain the right people with the right skills. Our local staff overseas play a key role in our operation’s success. This is a great opportunity to be part of an international team that contributes to the success of the UK’s trade goals. Our DIT values are Enterprising, Expert, Engaged and Inclusive.

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is responsible for making millions of decisions every year about entry clearance into the UK. There is a firm emphasis on national security and a culture of customer satisfaction. We contribute to achieving the Home Office’s priorities of securing our borders, managing immigration, and protecting our citizens. UKVI International are responsible for running the UK’s visa service, managing around 3 million applications a year from overseas nationals who wish to come to the UK to visit, study or work.
UKVI work is both interesting and challenging. We recruit local Entry Clearance Managers (ECMs), Entry Clearance Officers (ECOs), Visa Support Assistants, Office Managers and a variety of other interesting positions across our Network. Our staff all play an important role in contributing to the smooth running of the visa operation, ensuring that the immigration regulations are correctly and fairly applied to all applications for a UK visa. We offer continuous training and wide range of benefits to our staff.
