An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in the Development and Human Rights Section of the UK Mission to the United Nations. Working in the Peacebuilding, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Team, the successful candidate will be situated at the heart of the UK’s policy delivery on peacebuilding and governance at the UN, helping to shape the British Government’s policy and engagement at the Security Council, the General Assembly and the Peacebuilding Commission.

 

The successful candidate will act as a senior policy adviser and focal point for a range of peacebuilding issues and take a leading role in high-profile issues on the agenda of the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Peacebuilding Commission.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, those outlined below.

  • Senior policy adviser and UK Mission lead on peacebuilding and governance. This includes leading, and often representing the UK, on the Peacebuilding Commission, as well as working with relevant parts of the UN and other Member States to improve UN delivery on building and sustaining peace.
  • Lead on Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting peaceful, just and inclusive societies. With diplomatic lobbying, UK projects and internal networking the post holder will drive forward the UK objectives in the UN on tackling corruption and strengthening rule of law and good governance.
  • Lead on the files of several peacekeeping missions in the Security Council in countries where the missions are drawing down and other forms of UN support are needed. Working with the relevant London Departments, negotiating statements and mandates and preparing the UK Ambassadors the meetings.
  • The postholder will also represent the UK and negotiate resolutions in the General Assembly on peacebuilding and conflict mediation.
  • The postholder will need to work collegiately in a fast-paced and changing environment and be willing to support other team members and priorities as needed.

The ideal candidate will have: excellent interpersonal and written communication skills; a go-getting attitude; strong analytical and organisational abilities; the ability to prioritise and deliver results on multiple areas of work.

 

Essential characteristics are:

  • A graduate or post-graduate degree and three years of relevant work experience
  • An understanding of the United Nations system
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a good understanding of the challenges and sensitivities of working with other UN Member States.
  • Reliable, capable under pressure, able to complete multiple tasks and high volume of work on deadline with colleagues and with considerable autonomy.

Under US State Department requirements, the Mission may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders or G visa holders*. *A visas are acceptable at the Embassy and Consulates.  The UK Mission to the UN (UKMIS) accepts G visas, and British Defence Staff (BDS) outposts accept A or NATO visas. 

  • Knowledge of French
  • Rudimentary knowledge of the British Government, the British Foreign Office and the Department for International Development.
  • Experience of public service and/or international relations related work.

The target salary for this position is $65,416 annualized. Salary will be confirmed upon offer of employment.
