The British Embassy is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. Scottish Development International (SDI), Scotland’s international trade agency, plays an important part in the Embassy’s commercial outreach and works in close collaboration with the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) and Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).

The role is designed to support Scottish Development International’s trade ambitions in France in the science and technology sectors. The candidate will work closely with two Higher Executive Officers; one who focuses on Technology and the other on Life Sciences.  The candidate will provide project support to their colleagues (research, support for events, missions and exhibitions) as well as developing their own focus on a science or technology remit, with support. The candidate will also assist with prospecting work – identifying and securing meetings with new business contacts in France.

On a day to day basis, the jobholder will:

  • Work directly with two colleagues in the French science and technology trade team, delivering activities which support Scottish companies to trade internationally in or export to France
  • Support the delivery of key projects, events and initiatives in-market such as missions and exhibitions by providing administrative and logistical support as required
  • With support, liaise with specific Scottish companies about their ambitions and export strategies and conduct market research on the opportunities which are available to them in France
  • Work as part of an account team, supporting specific Scottish companies with their export activities
  • Identify and contact senior individuals in key French science and technology companies, communicating with them about Scotland’s capabilities in these sectors
  • Work as part of one or more global sub sector teams alongside colleagues from Scotland, Asia and the Americas
  • Manage a busy workload, ensuring that your effort and focus is appropriately split across the science and technology portfolios

The job holders’ work will be measured as a contribution to a global target of International Trade Opportunities generated (ITOs) as well as International Specialist Engagements (ISEs), which ultimately contribute to a global target of Forecast International Sales, which is SDI’s key published measure.

  • Fluent English;
  • Fluent French;
  • Good understanding of French business culture;
  • Academic business qualification e.g. degree in Business, Management, International Trade or equivalent;
  • Knowledge of the French technology or life sciences sectors; previous experience working in a business development role;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to work autonomously;
  • Ability to think laterally and be creative;
  • Ability to work well in a multi-cultural team;
  • Be credible and relate to a wide variety of clients.
  • Knowledge of Scotland’s business environment; 
  • International trade or investment experience.
