Main purpose of job:

The role of Security Guard is to maintain the integral security of the British Embassy and Ambassador’s Residence locations in Vientiane against a range of threats identified by the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Working within a team on a shift basis, the guard force will provide working hours security at the Embassy and at the Ambassador’s Residence.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Conducting access control of visitors and vehicles entering the Embassy compound and residence
  • Maintaining a visitors log, issuing visitors passes and providing the initial point of contact for all Embassy visitors
  • Regular patrolling of the Embassy and Residence locations
  • Other ad-hoc duties including providing basic assistance to disabled visitors and raising/ lowering the British flag at specified times
  • Ability to follow instructions and demonstrate initiative.
  • Good time management and organisational skills, able to respond appropriately in difficult situations. 
  • Able to communicate effectively in Basic English and Fluent in Lao.
  • Relevant security experience is desirable.

The successful candidate will have a practical, hands-on approach to contribute to operations of the British Embassy in Vientiane, and with strong customer service skills and resilience.  Training opportunities will be provided, as necessary, for the successful applicant.

Working patterns:

The successful applicant will be offered six months, fixed-term contract, subject to a 2-month probationary period. 

The successful candidate will work on a rolling shift basis for an average of 48 hours per week. Some night working will be required on a periodic basis.
