Interpreter / Translator

The British Embassy Dubai is looking for an energetic person to work as a full-time Translator and Administrative Officer in the Embassy’s Corporate Services (CS) Team.

The jobholder will provide English to Arabic and Arabic to English translation services to support the requirements across the Post. They will also be expected to perform a variety of administrative tasks to support the work of Corporate Services, specifically the Government Relations and Protocol team.

Duties and responsibilities:

- Translation (80%)

  • Provide Arabic-English-Arabic translation for all Embassy Teams where required, including, but not limited to: translating and drafting note verbales, translating official correspondence, and assisting with other translation requests.
  • Log all notes verbales and maintain a database of various note formats and their Arabic translation.
  • Provide translation support to our Defence colleagues, including technical translation
  • Provide translation support to our Trade team, including note verbales, MOUs, MoCs and local guidance on standards.
  • Provide interpretation support as required.
  • Support the UAE Visits and Protocol teams with translation services as required.

- Administrative support (20%)

  • Assist the Government Relations and Protocol Team with administrative duties, including collating data and acting as a point of contact, accompany during visits and recces.
  • Support Corporate Services Team when interacting with Arabic speaking contacts.
  • Flexibility to respond to Corporate Services Team requirements as they arise.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any response to a crisis.

Eligibility:

Applications will only be considered from those who are currently residing in the UAE and with a current and valid UAE resident visa. Applicants will be asked to provide evidence of their UAE resident visa/ Emirates ID as part of their application.

  • At least two (2) years of experience of translation work
  • Native/ Near native level of communication skills in English and Arabic. High-quality communications and drafting skills. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
  • Able to type effectively and accurately in Arabic and English.
  • Strong IT skills and well versed in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Proven record of organisational ability. Ability to prioritise and organise own workload and meet deadlines, whilst maintaining attention to detail and without compromising the quality of the work.
  • Ability to work independently, apply initiative, problem solve and work under pressure to meet multiple and changing priorities, deadlines and objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to engage at all levels internally and with external contacts, and collaborate effectively across Embassy teams.
  • Excellent customer service skills. Demonstrates courtesy and consideration in dealing with all stakeholders.
  • Translation certification (diploma, BA, etc.)
  • Experience in military translation/ technical translation
  • Experience of working in the diplomatic or government field
  • Experience of working in an office environment and doing general administration duties

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including: 25 days of leave per annum; on-site swimming pool, gym, and sports facilities (subject to COVID-19 restrictions).

Salary is at AED 11,363 per month.

There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

The Embassy is open from Monday to Friday, from 07:30 to 18:00. Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week (including breaks), and specific working hours for this role will be confirmed at a later time.

The successful candidate should be flexible in their approach to hours worked, as there may be some work out of hours (evening/ weekend) during events and visits. Flexible working arrangements may be considered based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.

The successful candidate will be required to transfer their visa under the Embassy's sponsorship.
