Driver / Messenger

Main purpose of job:

The British High Commission (BHC) is the official representation of the British Government in Cameroon and provides non-resident representation to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. 

The Driver will be an integral part of the Transport team as well as working on a regular basis with other Corporate Services Departments.  Working closely with colleagues to deliver a pro-active, customer focused, service in Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. 

The primary duty is to provide transport services for staff and visitors of the British High Commission Yaounde (1HMG) to and from assigned destinations within Yaounde and other Cameroonians Regions in a safe, efficient and courteous manner observing all road traffic rules and post security regulations. Perform administrative duties as may be required to support the effective running of the Yaounde office and Transport operations.

The job requires someone with a patient attitude, as the tight deadlines and busy traffic can often add a lot of stress to a driver’s duties. Presenting themselves in a professional way at all times.

Roles and responsibilities:

 Transport Services – 50%

  • Drive 1HMG staff and visitors to meetings and functions within Yaounde and Cameroon. Work in partnership with the team and/or client if unexpected changes occur and keep the customer informed at all times
  • Conduct Airport runs to pick up/drop off 1HMG staff and visitors. Liaise with Airport officials as necessary
  • Undertake journeys to other regions within Cameroon as necessary
  • Perform duties in line with post security regulations
  • Complete accurate journey record sheets for all journeys in official vehicles
  • Adhere to Cameroonian traffic laws and regulations at all times
  • Ensure customer’s safety at all times to the best of your ability and work in partnership with the Transport Manager should an incident occur

Vehicle Maintenance and Management – 30%

  • Keep accurate records of vehicle mileage and fuel consumption
  • Perform daily inspections to ensure that all official vehicles are road worthy and in good working order. Ensure vehicles are well maintained, clean both inside and out before each trip and report any defects. Duties include cleaning of the vehicles, regular services or repairs runs and performing pre-trip inspections before each drive
  • Wash / Clean official vehicles ensuring they are kept tidy and parked in a secured area`
  • Complete vehicle inspection checklists and promptly report any defects, faults or incidents that occur to the Transport Manager
  • Check that all vehicle equipment and tools are secured safely and are functioning correctly
  • Ensure that vehicles are prepared, fuelled and secured in advance of VIP visits. Also, ensure that all aspects of each VIP visit are well communicated, co-ordinated and delivered. You will be required to drive the Head of Mission and other high profile guests from time to time

Administrative Support – 20%

  • Provide administrative support for the day to day running of the Yaounde office
  • Assist the Transport Manager and liaise with other Corporate Services staff  as necessary
  • Update transport related data and maintain other records as may be delegated by the office / transport manager
  • Assist the Transport Manager in maintaining adequate records for all the operations of the transport unit required for audit purposes e.g. Journey records, Vehicle maintenance check lists, Fuel Consumption, etc
  • Familiarise, understand and adhere to the British High Commission Yaoundé’s Transport Policy
  • Report to the Transport Manager daily; attend weekly transport meetings and Corporate Service Department meetings
  • Perform adhoc duties that may include delivery of documents/letters to the MFA and other organizations and assisting with duties other than transport related functions.
  • General administration duties such as updating personal leave records, responding to email, reconciliation of Corporate Credit Cards within the agreed timelines, expense claim forms, expenses, etc.
  • Occasionally substitute for the Transport Supervisor during periods of leave. Therefore, need to be computer literate, fluent in English and be able to co-ordinate transport bookings.
  • Category B Drivers Licence
  • Minimum three years’ experience as a driver/chauffer
  • Good knowledge of the areas and roads of Yaoundé
  • Intermediate mechanical knowledge
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic IT literacy.
  • Operational level English and French

Language requirements: 

Language: English and French

Level of language required: Operational proficiency 

  • Experience driving around Cameroon
  • Experience working for an embassy, international organisation, NGO, or expatriate personnel in the sub-region
  • Qualifications for driving Civilian Armoured Vehicles
  • First aid qualifications
