A Locally Engaged, International Trade Advisor, Grade B3 (L) position has become available at the British Embassy, Baghdad. This reflects DIT’s ambition to increase business in Iraq for UK companies - not least as part of the support UK Export Finance can offer. Suitably qualified and experienced university graduates are invited to apply for the position.

 

Objective:

 

Reporting to the Director of International Trade, the successful candidate will deliver DIT services to UK companies and assist them in winning business in Iraq. Leading activities in a number of sectors, the candidate will develop a wide range of contacts as will be assessed against agreed targets set out in the DIT Iraq Country Business Plan.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

The successful candidate will:

·       Proactively develop DIT Iraq’s engagement in the Infrastructure, Healthcare and Lifesciences sectors. This to include identifying business opportunities and supporting UK companies to capitalise upon them.

·       Support our efforts to promote an understanding in Iraq of Public Private Partnerships and Aid-funded business; and seek out opportunities for UK companies.

·       Handle a range of business enquiries from UK companies in a dynamic and proactive manner, contributing to ambitious trade targets.

·       Develop a wide range of leading business and government contacts and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders.

·       Undertake representational activities including trade promotion activities such as Trade Shows, Missions and Conferences.

·       Be expected to undertake some travel requirements throughout Iraq, the Region and the UK.

·       Collaborating & Partnering: maintain and develop an effective, positive, and trusting working relationship with a wide range of stakeholders and customers, including Key Account Management of major UK companies operating in Iraq.

·       Leading & Communicating: with clarity, conviction and enthusiasm at various levels to build relationships, to help get business done and secure business wins.

Essential:

  • Native speaker in Arabic. A minimum level of C1 in the English language as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • A qualification equivalent to Level 6 or above (Bachelor degree or equivalent) as defined by the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) in an area of study (e.g. Business Administration, Commercial Law, English Language) directly related to the job vacancy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programmes, Outlook, Word, Excel and web based research tools and the use of social media such as Twitter.
  • Two or more years working in a similar field such as trade promotion, marketing, or business management.
  • A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.

 

Desirable:

  • Experience in the Infrastructure sector (including Construction, Water and/or Environmental services).

Working Hours and Remuneration:

 

The starting salary for this role is US$ 2,082 payable 13 times per year. In addition a monthly security allowance of $300 is payable. The allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Normal working hours are Sunday - Wednesday 0800–1600 and Thursday 0800-1400. The annual leave entitlement is 20 days. Other benefits include the British Embassy medical scheme (which also covers dependants) and access to subsidised restaurant facilities.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90 days probationary period.

 

Eligibility:

 

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:

  • Receive the appropriate level of local and UK security clearance;
  • Have (or be willing to obtain) the right to live and work in Iraq. Candidate's residence permit and work permit, and the expense to obtain them, will be their own responsibility.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend a competence-based interview at which a written test will also be conducted. Interviews are presently scheduled to take place at the British Embassy in Baghdad on 17-18 April but this is subject to change.

 

The successful candidate will be required to undergo security-vetting procedures.  Any offer of employment will be subject to the candidate achieving suitable clearances and reference checks.
