The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for the position of Prosperity Team Support Officer, based in Madrid.

This is an opportunity to play a formative role in establishing an effective Europe Prosperity Programme across the FCO’s European network. Based in Madrid, and integrated into the Economic & Public Policy Team, you will work to the Madrid Deputy Head of the Europe Prosperity Team. 

You will also work closely with a sister Prosperity Hub based in Berlin that has also been established to work on different defined themes, projects and groups of post, to ensure coherence across the Europe network as a whole.  

The Europe Prosperity Programme is a new initiative supported by the UK Government Prosperity Fund. The Europe Programme is focussed on the UK and the Single European Market and aims to promote and further projects in support of UK and European prosperity. The Europe Prosperity Programme started up in 2017 based on a project portfolio valued at £750,000 and supporting a range of work including smart and clean cities, green finance, artificial intelligence, pan-European supply chains, digital sector development, and Fintech. In 2018/19, the Programme will have a total budget of £1,300,000, rising to £1,700,000 in 2019/20. The portfolio will be focussed on four key themes:

a)       Digital and Innovation: to build on the ambition set out in the UK Industrial Strategy for the UK to be the world’s most innovative economy and to be at the forefront of the AI and data revolution;

b)       The Green, Clean Agenda: to maximise the advantages for UK industry arising from the global shift to clean growth;

c)       Pan-European and Global Supply Chains: to protect and promote the UK’s place in European supply chains in key sectors including in emerging and future economic and technological trends;

d)       UK/European Prosperity Partnerships: to develop initiatives with European partners in areas of mutual prosperity interest to boost prosperity flows in both directions and to share best practice.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Providing administrative support to the European Prosperity network
  • Providing logistical support for events and programmes organised by the European network 
  • Advisory/fire-fighting role for all procurement and organisational aspects of the Prosperity Fund

  • Excellent English and Spanish (C level (according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
  • Expert user of excel, word, outlook and databases 
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines 
  • Effective communications skills 
  • Experience of event organisation
  • Experience of working in fast-moving multicultural environment.

  • Knowledge of workings of UK government
  • Experience of project management
  • Knowledge of FCO Prism and Hyper systems.

This is a full-time permanent contract. The annual salary is 28,909 € (at A2 grade). The working hours are 37.5 hrs per week.

The successful candidate will be subject to a confirmation of a background check and security clearance with a probation period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy/Consulate based on gross annual salary.

The British Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of Spanish income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
