Main purpose of job:

A driver is responsible for the provision of Transport and Courier services for the British High Commission in Kampala.  The driver will transport BHC staff and visitors on all official travel; and provide prompt delivery and collection of mail/documents as required.  The driver will also be responsible for ensuring proper management of assets entrusted to him including security of the same facilities and safety of passengers at all times.  The post holder will be required to work closely with the Transport Officer.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

Driving Services

  • Attend morning meetings for assignment of duties and plan for the day proceedings with the Transport Officer.
  • Be smart and presentable at all times and be ready and prepared for an assignment 15 minutes in advance.
  • Comply with all traffic regulations.
  • Work closely with the Transport Officer to ensure V I P Transport service are carried out in a professional and well-coordinated manner; liaise with the responsible officer for proper coordination of VIP Transport needs.
  • Ensure that you can be easily contacted by phone or radio during working hours.

 

Asset Management

  • Support proper vehicle maintenance by reporting all defects on time and keeping the service record well.
  • Carry out daily checks on the vehicle to include condition of the car seat belts, proper tyre inflation wipers indicators, headlights etc., complete the car checklist and hand into the Transport Officer.
  • Confirm vehicle has wheel brace and the first aid kit is in date and well equipped.
  • Manage and take good care of mobile phone and the radio assigned to you.
  • Always keep vehicle clean and tidy. 
  • Calculate mileage, TOIL and travel claims and submit to the Transport Officer with in the required time period.

 

Records Management:

  • Comply with UK Government procedures on office records ensuring that journey record sheets are completed after each journey and handed in to the Transport Officer at the end of every month.
  • Record mileage and the amount of fuel put in the car each time you fill the car with diesel / petrol.
  • Hand in the completed car check list to the Transport Officer at the beginning of the week.

 

 

  • 3 - 5 years of driving experience in a similar institution
  • Clean driving licence
  • Ability to read and write
  • Good communication skills
  • Defensive driving training or other relevant driving training would be an advantage
