Main purpose of the job:

The Migration Officer will work to the Migration Delivery Officer in Colombo in order to carry out the UK’s migration objectives in Sri Lanka. The primary focus of this activity will be on increasing the number of returns from the UK to Sri Lanka and Maldives and overseeing activities / projects in support of migration objectives.

Roles and responsibilities:

Project Work (50%)

We support projects in developing capacity within Sri Lanka in the area of migration. We wish to counter harmful illegal migration both from and to Sri Lanka and Maldives. Additionally, we wish to support returning Sri Lankans and Maldivians to resettle and re-integrate safely and effectively, and to promote return.

Verifications: (25%)

We provide support to departments in the UK who wish to verify documents from Sri Lanka, principally with regards to travel document applications and court documentation. 

We also undertake interviews by telephone and/or Skype with Sri Lankan nationals currently residing in the UK.  As such, you should be fluent in both written/spoken form in Sinhala and Tamil in order to support his work. 

Operational Support (25%)

We work as part of a multi-functional team that delivers the United Kingdom’s Home Office and FCO objectives across the Migration Agenda. This includes data analysis, assisting with airline operations, undertaking site visits and liaison with partners. You will be expected to deliver these objectives as a part of our team.

What we do:

Immigration Enforcement International (IEI) operates in 33 countries as multi-functional teams in support of the delivery of the United Kingdom’s Home Office and FCO objectives across the migration agenda.

What we want from you

We want you to work as part of our team, but to have the ability to make decisions independently to support the migration delivery objectives. We want you to be able to plan and organise your daily work to meet the migration objectives and increase the number of returnees to both Sri Lanka and Maldives.  We want you to have excellent people skills that can be used strategically to build relationships with key partners to assist with returnees.  

Attendance at meetings, Government establishments including the airport is a fundamental part of the job. Therefore, the successful candidate should be prepared to speak in public.

The role of the MDO is extremely varied and may necessitates travel for liaison, training, site visits and meetings. Most of this can be done in a day but some overnight stays will be required. The successful candidate may also be required to attend training events and an annual conference, usually conducted outside of Sri Lanka.

The post is for a 12 month contract that may be extended at the discretion of the Home Office IEI.

Language requirements: 

Language: English, Sinhala and Tamil

Level of language required: Fluent in English, Sinhala and Tamil  (will be tested at interview stage)

Other skills / experience / qualifications: 

Essential on arrival:

  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational and time management skill.
  • An ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision is essential.
  • Previous immigration, law enforcement and/or analytical or investigation experience would be an advantage.

Desirable:

Good IT skills, desirable to be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power point
