Main purpose of job:

The senior economic adviser is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the Hong Kong and Macau economies;  understanding and reporting on Hong Kong’s financial services and monetary policy (with a particular emphasis on the offshore RMB market) and the UK’s trading relationship with Hong Kong; and promoting the UK’s economic reputation in Hong Kong and Macau.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:


  • Provide high quality advice to British Ministers and officials on macro-economic developments, financial stability and financial and economic policy in Hong Kong and Macao. Provide reporting on the Hong Kong expert view on mainland China economic issues.
  • Lobby the government of the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions on global economic and financial services issues to gain support for UK objectives.
  • Developing and delivering a programme of events, including oversight of high level visits, in support of UK priorities – especially to promote the City of London’s role as an offshore Renminbi centre.
  • Enhance the UK’s economic reputation in this key market using high level and expert visits, and regular communications with key stakeholders. (Oral, written, formal and informal.)
  • Offer comprehensive support to the Department for International Trade team, particularly on trade statistics, UK economic messaging and investment promotion, and support cooperation with government and business stakeholders to advance the UK-Hong Kong trade relationship.
  • Engage government, regulator and business stakeholders to advance the UK-Hong Kong trade relationship in financial services.
  • Working with the China Economic Network across our missions on the mainland to explore opportunities Hong Kong offers to the UK’s relationship with mainland China (e.g. in connection with the Belt and Road Initiative, Greater Bay Area Initiative and cross-boundary market links).


Security clearance requirements for this role necessitate that the successful applicant has a footprint of two in the last five years in the UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

We would be prepared to sponsor a Hong Kong work permit for the successful candidate.

  • Must have a high level of economic literacy and either a professional qualification in the field or substantial professional experience working on economic issues.
  • A strong track record of delivery.  The successful candidate will need to be able to project manage occasional seminars, workshops and high level visits, providing strategic direction and policy advice on content; and oversight of logistics.
  • A proven networker – it is essential in this role to build a strong network of stakeholders in the business, academic, economic specialist and government communities in order to deliver on this challenging agenda.
  • A team-player who is able to work across Sections in the Consulate and to contribute to broader corporate initiatives.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in financial markets and the internationalisation / liberalisation of China would be a plus.
  • Experience of public policy work on economic issues would also be useful.
