Main purpose of job:
 


The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government’s international business development agency. DIT USA, working closely with DIT and other agencies in the United Kingdom, is charged with transatlantic trade development between the UK and the US; and with assisting US companies looking to invest in the UK. DIT is hiring two positions covering the Creative & Digital Media sectors and the Technology industries in the New York area. One position will be heavily focused on investment, helping to identify US companies looking to internationalize. The other position will be focused on trade, assisting UK companies enter the US market and identifying business opportunities with New York area corporates. However, both positions will have a high degree of crossover. Please indicate in your cover letter which position (covering either trade or investment) you prefer; preference will be discussed during the interview process.  


Technology Defined as: Artificial Intelligence, Communications, Software, Hardware, Electronic Systems, Semiconductor Design, Cybersecurity and Data Analytics.


 


Creative and Media Involves: Film & TV, Design, Video Games, Advertising (including marketing & PR), Publishing, and Digital/Social Media.


 


Roles and responsibilities:


 


Investment Position


  • Proactively identify New York area companies within the sectors interested in setting up or expanding their operations in the UK to drive capital investment and job growth in the UK; make initial contact with C-level individuals and schedule company meetings for the Trade & Investment Officer. Attend meetings where appropriate and assist in the management of client relationships. Support US companies already active in the UK market.
  • Work with internal and external partners, including regional economic development agencies (US & UK), service providers, and other key ecosystem influencers to facilitate investment into the UK.
  • Assist on relationship managing Fortune 500 level key accounts; identify new opportunities for investment as well as help grow & retain operations already located in the UK.

 


Trade Position


  • Meet with UK tech & creative companies to discuss US market entry/growth strategy; researching and providing business intelligence for the local market
  • Develop relationships with corporate partners/buyers of creative & tech products & services from Fortune 1000 companies located in New York; identify brand contacts from the C-level to Heads of Innovation & Partnership.
  • Assist with trade missions of UK companies focused around a specific subsector of creative or tech looking to enter the New York market.

 

Both Positions


  • Build knowledge of developments and trends in the sectors for both the US and the UK; build relationships with accelerators, incubators, coworking spaces, and trade associations.
  • Provide operational and administrative support, including helping with budget planning, to the Trade & Investment Officer and to the wider DIT team as and when required.
  • Liaise with both internal teams and external contacts at an executive level.
  • Assist with initiatives such as panel discussions, receptions, conferences and other key industry events to promote the UK’s strengths in the Tech and Creative & Media industries. Contribute to administrative and logistical support for event facilitation.

  • Support HM Government and its Technology and Creative Industries strategies in North America to ensure a future trade agreement is free and fair. The individuals will work with the tech/creative sector industry to understand and feedback any potential concerns of market access barriers to trade and investment between the UK and US.

  • Assist on ministerial visit programs and work across Consulate departments to help deliver high profile events.
  • Build and manage a comprehensive list of key contacts in the industry; update and utilize internal CRM system.

Essential:


  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
  • 1-3 years full-time professional experience in international business with a proven track record of fostering business relationships.
  • Ability and credibility to deal with companies/organizations at a senior level in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Working knowledge of the New York area and/or UK tech & creative industries.
  • Proclivity for identifying high growth tech start-ups/SMEs for international expansion.
  • Strong and enthusiastic networking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, effectively manage, and execute multiple tasks; ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and good follow up discipline.
  • Capacity to work independently without supervision, as part of a team and work within tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Excel, and Outlook; enhanced online research skills desirable.
  • Proficiency/Proven record in using Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media tools for business.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain processes and issues to teams.
  • Ability to undertake occasional travel within the US and the UK; ability to attend morning and evening events.


Desirable:


  • Ready-made contacts within the tech & creative industries in New York and/or the UK
  • Awareness of the UK’s capability in the tech & creative industries
