The British Embassy in Madrid is seeking a creative and dynamic team player to fill a new position in the Communications team, the Consular Communications Officer.

This is an important role: we are looking for someone to design and run consular campaigns.  Our consular footprint in Spain is significant, there are 300k British residents registered in Spain, and last year there were 19 million British visitors to Spain.

There will be two key strands to these consular campaigns.  The first is focused on advising British nationals living in Spain on how to prepare for our exit from the EU, working with our network of consulates across Spain, local partners and comms team colleagues.  Secondly, the role will help develop consular prevention campaigns, working on reducing the number of preventable incidents before they happen and help minimise the risk to British people overseas, in line with the UK’s 2016-2020 Consular Strategy (link here). 

We are looking for someone with experience of working on campaigns and experience of working with both traditional media and social media.  You will be a collaborative team player, with good political judgement, confident in liaising with colleagues and partners (including at a senior level), and able to effectively manage your time and deliver results at pace and to deadline.

You will work in our dynamic and friendly Communications Team, working closely with Consular colleagues across the wider UK in Spain Network of Consulates (including being part of our crisis comms response). 

There are potential opportunities for travel both within Spain and to the UK.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Campaigns: Delivery of consular communications campaigns.  Working with key partners to plan, implement and evaluate campaigns.(50% of time) 
  • Digital: Support creation of digital content on UK in Spain’s social media outlets, including video and infographics, and developing relevant digital partnerships, in support of consular campaigns. (25% of time) 
  • Communications: Develop engaging print and audio content to share with partners and media contacts, in support of consular campaigns. (25% of time)

 

 

  • Experience of designing, implementing and evaluating campaigns.
  • Experience of working with the press and of digital communications in English
  • Ability to work across teams and be credible with senior colleagues and partners
  • Strong organisational skills, good eye for detail and accuracy
  • Capacity to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities
  • Willingness to travel within Spain and potentially the UK when required
  • Knowledge of and interest in UK-Spain relations, UK and Spanish politics, news and current affairs in Spain
  • Awareness of the work of the British Embassy and Consulates across Spain
  • A university degree or equivalent qualification

This is a fixed-term, full-time one year contract with possibility of renewal for another year. The working hours are Monday- Friday 09:00-17:30.

The successful candidate will be subject to a confirmation of a background check and security clearance.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy / Consulate based on gross annual salary.

The British Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of Spanish income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa / passport requirements: must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
