Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (Policy & Political roles)
Economic and Prosperity

The British Embassy in France is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Prosperity and Economic Officer based in Paris.

This role is the Economic and Social Affairs Team, which covers French economic and social policy developments; aspects of Brexit including customs; trade policy; and multilateral meetings such as the G7 and G20.

The role will be focused on trade policy, Brexit issues, and coordination of the embassy’s Prosperity agenda. The postholder will need to be good at understanding and explaining complex issues and be ready to build a network of strong relationships with senior contacts in Whitehall, and in French business and government. The postholder will also be expected to organise visits to France by UK ministers and senior officials in connection with his or her policy area.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Brexit: The postholder will be responsible for engagement, analysis and reporting in connection with the UK’s future trade and customs relationship with the EU. In conjunction with the head of the team and other colleagues you will need to build a range of contacts in Whitehall and the French system with a view to being able to effectively represent UK positions to French counterparts and to report back views and analysis to London.

Trade policy: In the context of global trade tensions and a widespread international desire to modernise the world trading system the postholder will be required to keep abreast of French views, engaging with a range of stakeholders from the public sector and think tanks, and building close relationships with officials in the Department for International Trade – both Paris and London-based.

Prosperity: The post acts as the coordinator of the embassy’s Prosperity workstreams – initiatives where Paris-based staff from the Foreign Office and Department for International Trade work closely on joint projects. As well as acting as the secretariat for the cross-embassy Prosperity Board, you will have a role in monitoring progress of (and expenditure on) joint Prosperity projects. You are also likely to lead on aspects of the agenda yourself (e.g. the current postholder has been the embassy’s representative on a dialogue to improve economic links between Dover and Calais).

  • Excellent relationship-building skills;
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively in person and in writing;
  • Well-developed analysis and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to pick up new issues and topics quickly;
  • Ability to build and develop a range of contacts within government and private sector to build effective working relationships and networks and links to civil society;
  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a team;
  • Excellent communication skills in both English and French.

  • University degree, preferably in an economic field or with a strong economic component;
  • Experience of working in a policy environment, particularly an economic or trade context;
  • Experience engaging internationally.
