Main purpose of job:
The jobholder will advise the British Embassy on internal political issues with a specific lead focus on human rights and developing the Embassy’s engagement with civil society. The jobholder will play an important role in the Political & Press team, working closely with senior embassy staff to build relationships with civil society, human rights activists, relevant government bodies, and NGOs in Yangon and across the country. The jobholder should also develop wide-ranging personal networks with key stakeholders across the political spectrum and will be expected to provide independent reporting and analysis on political and human rights issues.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
· Provide timely and accurate political reporting and analysis, with a particular focus on parliament and developments within the NLD government. Develop a wide-ranging personal network of political and parliamentary contacts to help inform proactive independent analysis.
· Provide policy and logistical support to Embassy, UK, and UK-funded visits and programmes, including ad hoc interpretation.
· Work with the Programme Officer to oversee delivery of programme funds. Work with potential implementers to develop and refine new ideas and project proposals and provide monitoring and evaluation of existing portfolio
- Strong Burmese and English language skills, both written and spoken.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively to staff and external parties
- Understanding of the wider political, economic and human rights context in Myanmar
- Personal drive and the ability to be a self-starter as well as a team player.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- The job holder must be prepared to travel within the country.
- This is a full-time appointment. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

The British Embassy Rangoon offers a competitive remuneration package, including salary, benefits, leave entitlement of 22 days per annum (calculated in pro rata).
