Commercial Diplomacy

Lead embassy project work, covering all aspects of the project design and implementation process. In charge of our Chevening programme. Support work of Commercial and Trade Policy Officer.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Prosperity

  • Be the central source of knowledge of all prosperity activity and opportunities across Paraguay, conducting visits outside of Asuncion when needed to drive forward or follow-up activity;
  • Build a strong network of relevant contacts in Paraguayan business, regulators and government bodies, developing and maintaining a prosperity contacts network, identifying new contacts, and maintaining regular contact with key players;
  • Exchange best practice with prosperity colleagues across the Americas region to help support region-wide delivery of key objectives;
  • Oversee economic reporting and analysis of business and investment climate in Paraguay;
  • Assist Commercial and Trade Policy Officer to increase bilateral trade and investment by identifying new business opportunities for UK companies in key sectors in Paraguay;
  • Work with Political and Communications Officer to identify new projects/partners/areas of work in support of the Embassy’s commercial/prosperity objectives – engaging with a wide range of internal and external contacts and stakeholders;
  • Work with Political and Communications Officer to raise awareness of Embassy commercial project work in support of public diplomacy objectives     

Projects

  • Work with Political and Communications Officer to identify new projects/partners/areas of work in support of the Embassy’s commercial/prosperity objectives – engaging with a wide range of internal and external contacts and stakeholders;
  • Work with Political and Communications Officer to raise awareness of Embassy commercial project work in support of public diplomacy objectives.

Chevening

  • Ensure delivery of the objectives of the Chevening Programme in Paraguay;
  • Maintain awareness of the Chevening brand as a UK-funded scholarship programme and attract and select scholarship candidates with the greatest potential to become future leaders.

Line Management

  • Line manage the Commercial and Prosperity Assistant (CPA) in line with FCO guidance and best practice and oversee management of the projects that the CPA leads on.

  • Previous experience in trade promotion work;
  • Good IT skills and economically literate;
  • A proven ability to carry out research and write/present reports;
  • Able to work as part of a team on larger Embassy/regional events (e.g. Trade Fairs) and individually, with minimal supervision, following up commercial leads.

Level of language required: Fluent in English and Spanish

 


  • Experience with using social media (e.g. twitter);
  • Knowledge of international trade policy environment e.g. EU/Mercosur negotiations and Free Trade Agreements;

Learning and development opportunities

The British Embassy in Asuncion is committed to learning and development and there is a range of training on offer for the successful applicant to support their work in the embassy.

Working within the Embassy team you would be expected to participate in wider Embassy learning and to complete mandatory training on performance management and security. You may also be asked to travel regionally or internationally (dependent on funding).

The Embassy is a small, but friendly team, with most staff filling multiple roles. Flexibility and teamwork are essential.

Working patterns: 

This is a full-time role. We are open to flexible working patterns. In return the officer may be asked to help with occasional evening events.
