Under the guidance of the Events & Residence Manager, the job holder will assist in the day to day care and running of the Official Residence of the British High Commissioner, and with the delivery of the many official events held at the house.  The Residence is a venue for such events, but is also home to the High Commissioner and her husband.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Tasks related to day-to-day care and running of the Residence, including:

  • Regular thorough cleaning of specified inside and outside areas, as directed by Residence Manager, including summerhouse/pool and bar area; patios (including all fixtures and fittings); outside bathrooms.
  • Regular interior cleaning and other tasks, such as routine checking of electrical and other appliances (eg A.C units; fans; light bulbs; taps; toilets etc); cleaning of silverware and brass fittings.
  • Responsibility for disposing of household refuse, including sorting for recycling.
  • Reporting any maintenance and general care issues to the Events and Residence Manager.
  • Assist Events and Residence Manager with upkeep of inventories, as required.

Tasks related to the delivery of official events at the Residence, including:

  • Assisting with preparation for events, including setting out furniture and other equipment for outdoor and indoor functions.
  • Receiving deliveries to the Residence, and assisting with moving delivered items.
  • Assisting with the arrival and set-up requirements of outside catering contractors.
  • Serving of drinks and food.
  • Assisting Events and Residence Manager with planning, layout and presentation for functions.
  • Cleaning up afterwards, including washing dishes, as required.

Other tasks:

  • Assisting the High Commissioner’s houseguests.
  • Taking telephone messages.
  • Monitoring outside service people/contractors in and outside the house.
  • Attending residence and all staff meetings.
  • Assisting the Events and Residence Manager with ad-hoc tasks and projects, as requested.

NB The responsibilities set out above are indicative. Flexibility is essential, as the tasks required will change in line with requirements at the Residence.

Working pattern

This is a part-time role – 25 hours per week.  The job holder will liaise with Events and Residence Manager regarding the exact hours to be worked in any given week.  The holder will be required to be flexible about working hours, and aware that they will be expected to work during evenings on a regular basis, and occasionally at weekends.  Time off in lieu will be available to compensate for evening/weekend hours worked. 

Scope of role

The role requires someone who is flexible, adaptable and pays attention to detail. The job holder will be part of the small team of residence staff, and will be expected to work harmoniously with their colleagues. Desirable personal attributes include:

  • A positive, friendly, polite and out-going attitude.
  • Excellent organisational/time management skills.
  • The ability to take the initiative, and make decisions independently regarding tasks required.
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • The ability to respond positively, calmly and quickly to changes of plan or last minute requests.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (in person and on the telephone).
  • The period of probation for this role in 6 months, though the British High Commission reserves the right to extend this in order to fairly assess performance
  • A full induction and coaching will be arranged for the successful applicant.
  • The pro-rated starting salary for this position is BD$ 21,721 per annum
  • A comprehensive mandatory pension plan is offered after successful completion of the probation period.
  • Subject to plan provider approval, group medical coverage is offered after the first month of service
  • Core office hours are 7.45am-4pm, Monday -Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays. Flexible working hours apply at the Residence.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 16 days pro rata rising to 20 days after one year of service.
  • A combination of up to 14 UK and local public holiday days are also observed.
  • An excellent command of the English language is required
  • Education - Min 3 CXCs (Inc. Math & English)
  • At least 2 years previous experience and proven track record in a similar role
  • IT competency (Including use of the internet and Microsoft Office, Word & Excel)
