Main purpose of job:

The British Defence Liaison Staff (BDLS) Canberra plays a key role in developing, maintaining and promoting the UK-Australia defence and security relationship. Their mission is to build enduring strategic relationships with a wide range of Australian partners in order to further the objectives outlined in the UK Ministry of Defence Strategy for Australia.

We are looking for a driver to support the BDLS - Canberra team. The successful candidate must be a proactive ambassador for the British High Commission and will be responsible for driving and maintaining all vehicles on charge to BDLS.

This is an interesting and varied role, which will involve frequent Ministerial, and Senior Military visits to Canberra. There will be some driving tasks that require an early start or late finish, a combination of time off in lieu and or overtime will be available for hours beyond the contracted weekly hours. As BDLS often represents Her Majesty’s Government at commemorative events in Australia, there will be a further need to work on certain weekends. The successful candidate will need to be flexible and resilient to help cover last minute changes to transport plans during busy periods.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Drive the Defence Adviser other Defence Advisers to official appointments as required.
  • Provision of administrative support to the Defence Adviser and the BDLS team.
  • Official transportation of personnel, goods and official letters/parcels as required.
  • Supporting programmes for incoming senior visitors.
  • Daily check-up of vehicles and arrangements of repairs, maintenance, cleaning and refuelling of official vehicles.
  • Route research and support to travel itinerary development.
  • Administrative activities: record keeping of journeys and fuel consumption.
  • Administration: invoice & account handling for car servicing, repair and other related work.
  • Working with other British Defence Staff personnel on common tasks and provision of general administrative support to the Defence Section as required.
  • Responsible for the office stationery.
  • Process Visit Requests and maintenance of the Visits Register.
  • Holds a current full driving licence.
  • Able to multi-task and prioritise urgent work while ensuring that routine tasks are not overlooked.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including some evenings and weekends).
  • Able to present a professional image of the British Defence Liaison Staff
  • Positive attitude and a customer-focused approach
  • Good IT Skills

Salary is at AU$ 61,580 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.
