Main purpose of job:

This role offers the successful applicant an opportunity to work across the British Embassy on some of the most pressing and high-profile issues, focusing on the political and military aspect of the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. You will be working in the Embassy’s busy Pol-Mil Team, which has responsibility for producing high quality analysis and reporting, as well as delivering the UK’s financial security commitment to Afghanistan.

As the Political-Military officer you will provide local insights and reporting on subjects including the security sector, NATO and ANDSF, civilian casualties and terrorist insurgency (Taliban, ISKP). You will be responsible for actively monitoring government and provincial level political and military decisions, which impact the security and stability of Afghanistan.

In addition, the jobholder will also be required to report on human rights issues which directly relate to the security environment. You will be responsible for tracking developments in relation to civilian casualties and contribute to the Embassy’s wider reporting on Women, Peace and Security – a UK priority.

You may also be called upon to provide translation and interpretation for British Embassy colleagues. There may be opportunities for you to represent the UK at high-level GIROA meetings.

Afghanistan is a priority for the British Government and the next few years will be particularly important. The British Embassy is one of the UK’s largest and most high profile Embassies in Afghanistan and within the UK’s diplomatic network.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:


 Main Priorities 

Specifically the job holder will be required to:

  • Draft timely reports and provide analysis on key security issues in the current political and military context to inform Embassy decision making.
  • Contribute to the Embassy’s human rights work on reporting on civilian casualties and Women, Peace and Security.
  • Build and maintain a wide range of contacts with the Afghan Security Ministries, Embassies, Office of National Security Council and relevant Parliamentary defence and internal security committees.
  • Provide support to Political Section and Defence Section.
  • Provide support to security programming within the Pol-Mil Team.
  • Provide translation support to Embassy meetings involving local interlocutors.
  • Represent the Embassy at formal government-to-government meetings and engagements.

Essential

  • Fluent spoken and written English (equivalent to a minimum IELTS score of 6.5)
  • Fluent spoken and written Dari and Pashto
  • Bachelor’s University degree. Knowledge of Afghan politics and the security sector.
  • Political analysis skills
  • Excellent interpretation and translation skills
  • An ability to work on own initiative and under pressure
  • Excellent computer skills including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in an international organisation or Embassy
  • Experience/understanding of Afghan Ministries, especially the security Ministries (MOI, MOD, NDS)
  • Excellent references
  • Knowledge of NATO, human rights and terrorist insurgencies.
