The British Embassy in Jakarta is looking for a dynamic and proactive individual with a keen interest in international affairs to provide expert advice and analysis on issues relating to external political issues for Indonesia, including their membership of multilateral organisations such as the UN General Assembly, ASEAN and G20.  The position sits within the Embassy’s high performing and friendly Foreign Policy and Security team.  You will contribute to our reporting on Indonesia and our interactions with Indonesia’s Ministries, academia, civil society, think tanks, UK based stakeholders and other relevant partners.  You will also carry out similar duties in relation to Timor-Leste.  You will work across Embassy teams to deliver the UK’s foreign policy objectives. This will include helping to arrange inward and outward Ministerial visits and those of senior officials.  The jobholder will report to the Head of Foreign Security Policy Team.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Maintain an excellent network of senior level contacts across the Indonesian government, politics, academia, civil society, business, other international partners, think-tanks, and with UK based stakeholders;
  • Understand and have the ability to engage with foreign policy discussions in Indonesia;
  • Provide analysis on the long and short-term policy objectives of Indonesia’s foreign policy and Timor-Leste’s, including regional issues and relationships with international partners;
  • Provide high quality briefings to senior UK diplomats and other visiting VIPs;
  • Maintain a network remotely with partners in Timor-Leste and join outward UK Embassy visits to Dili;
  • Work with the wider Embassy teams to deliver UK foreign policy objectives;
  • Perform project management functions (bidding assessment, budget proposal reviews, budget management, monitoring and evaluation);
  • Handle other tasks or functions within the wider political team as required;
  • To support wider corporate work of the Embassy, including in advance of, and during, our response to a crisis, e.g. natural disaster.

The job-holder will gain:

  • Experience of working in a diplomatic mission.
  • Understanding of UK Foreign Policy Objectives.
  • Bachelor degree in International Relations or relevant major
  • At least one year of working experience in a related field (government institution, think tank, NGOs, university)
  • A keen sense of honesty, integrity and confidentiality
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team and be adaptable to the working environment
  • Good IT skills and experience, including MS Office
  • A positive attitude to working flexible hours, able to work on own initiative
  • Fluency in both English and Bahasa Indonesia
  • Report writing and analysis skills
  • Interest in and knowledge of Indonesian foreign policy
  • Good networking skills
  • Understanding of UK foreign policy priorities
  • Understanding of Timor-Leste policies and foreign policy
  • Experience in project management
