Main purpose of job:

Economic Security is a key priority for our Foreign Secretary and the wider UK Government. A dynamic subject area, Economic Security covers economic activities that have an impact on national security. This role will provide support to the Head of Economic Security Attaché by analysing Economic Security developments in Japan and helping to deliver collaboration between the UK and Japan.

As this is a newly created team, this role will need to be flexible and there will be opportunities to shape the scope of activities.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The job-holder will support the Head of Economic Security to explore and deliver collaboration between the UK and Japan in this cross-cutting and strategically important field. This includes:

  • Building your own understanding of Economic Security through events, meetings and independent learning. Topics include Global Supply Chains, Investment Security, Energy Security, Sanctions and more.
  • Monitor and report on Economic Security trends in Japan, identifying risks and opportunities to showcase and build UK strengths.
  • Work with other teams in the Embassy to conduct analysis into global supply chains and other Economic Security issues as necessary. Contribute your perspective to emerging UK policy and strategy.
  • Help to promote UK-Japan collaboration by supporting on high profile visits/events for Economic Security.
  • Build a network of contacts in the Government of Japan, business, and academia/journalism – drawing on these to inform your work.
  • Carry out other corporate, administrative, and team responsibilities as required, including on crisis preparedness.

Overseeing expenditure related to economic security projects/events throughout the year (£ TBC).

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn about a range of subject areas. 
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders and build networks of contacts.

Language requirements:

Language: English

Desirable language: Japanese

Level of language required:  Fluent English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 800 points or above or equivalent) 

Good business level Japanese language skills (JLPT level 2 or equivalent)

  • Experience in politics, security or economics/trade.
  • Programme Management skills.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

The British Embassy, British Consulate-General and UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office provide a range of training opportunities in core diplomatic and commercial skills, from networking and communication to project management. The British network in Japan works closely with Embassies across the Asia-Pacific region to share experience and learning. Working across a range of teams gives the opportunity for insight into trade and investment promotion, market access, trade policy, science & innovation and many other areas.  Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.

Alongside a number of Embassy-specific courses that will need to be completed on arrival, the Embassy is supportive of learning and development. We offer five development days per year, and regular opportunities for learning and development delivered both within the mission and regionally in Asia. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.

In addition, there are regular seminars and workshops relating to Economic Security that the post holder will be encouraged to attend. This is an ever-changing policy area, and so a commitment to continuous learning is essential.

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.

Working patterns:
