Main purpose of job:

We are looking for an  enthusiastic and fast-learning Intern to join and support the team with day-to-day administrative tasks based at the British Ambassador’s Residence and working with the Head of Protocol of the Residence, providing high standards of customer service to the British Ambassador.  This is a great opportunity for somebody early in their career to get an insight into, and experience of, a wide range of administrative, protocol and management tasks in an international environment, and working directly in the British Ambassador’s team.

Roles and responsibilities:

The Protocol Intern will work with the Head of Protocol, helping with a wide variety of tasks and projects and getting experience of the range of administrative and corporate support. 

Duties are likely to include:

  • General administrative assistance for the Head of Protocol/Residence.
  • Support for planning and organising events for the British Ambassador and the Residence.
  • Researching suppliers and products, assisting in procurement.
  • Assisting the Head of Protocol/Residence with local and international purchases and financial administration.
  • Liaison with and supervising of suppliers.
  • Filing and keeping key information lists updated.
  • Supporting the  Head of Protocol/Residence  in health and safety or estates projects.
  • Stepping in to help cover staff vacations.
  • Other duties as required by the  Head of Protocol/Residence.

This is a varied role, with the opportunity to get experience in an unusually broad mix of areas of administrative support in a high profile diplomatic setting working directly with the British Ambassador. An excellent suite of online training is available and the job-holder is expected to commit to personal learning and development as part of the role.

The Embassy’s working language is English.

Essential:  

  • Currently studying or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, such as Business Administration, Hospitality Management, International Business or similar.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Internet) and MS Teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong customer focus.
  • Ability to work at pace to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and working as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail.

Language requirements: 

Language: Written and spoken English and Spanish

Level of language required: Fluent in both languages

Desirable: 

  • Experience in hospitality management and/or budgeting.

Must have the legal status to live and work in Dominican Republic. 

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. 

Learning and development opportunities:

Working patterns:

Monday to Thursday from 08:00 to 16:30 and Fridays from 08:00 to 13:00.

  • The job will normally be based in the Residence of the British Ambassador 
  • The position requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in the Dominican Republic and will be subject to satisfactory reference checks and successful receipt of local and overseas security clearances
