Main purpose of job:

The political and economics intern will be part of the British Embassy Caracas Political and Economics Section. They will contribute to political and economic analysis through research and reporting. The role will also include supporting on the cooperation projects on areas aligned with the objectives of the Embassy such as climate change, human rights, gender equality etc. The position offers a unique opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and practical exposure to economics, public policies, political and sustainable development topics.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

·         Research, analyse and report on key economic and political developments in Venezuela. This will include producing weekly press summaries and reports on thematic topics, including but not limited to economics, humanitarian situation and human rights. The role also includes monitoring and updating of the main economic, socio-economic and human rights indicators. (70%).

·         Support the Embassy’s project life-cycle, by processing and reviewing bids, supporting due diligence assessment, and conducting monitoring and evaluation under the Programme Responsible Owner. (20%).

·         Support on ad-hoc admin tasks to support on the Political and Economic section priorities (10%)


  • Early-career professionals from Economics, International Relations, Political Sciences, or another discipline with an economics and/or statistics component.
  • Students in their final year of any of the mentioned majors who have finished all mandatory courses and have thesis or graduation act pending.
  • Solid understanding of Venezuela’s economic and political reality, and capacity to report developments in an objective and time-sensitive manner
  • Strong research, analytical and writing skills.
  • Skilled in MS Office software tools, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Ability to manage quantitative and qualitative tools for data analysis.

  • Experience writing reports in English.
  • Experience managing or monitoring projects funded by overseas partners.
  • Eagerness to learn about foreign policy and curiosity for how Venezuela plays a role in the region.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work and live in Venezuela. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
