Main purpose of job:

Department for Business and Trade (DBT) South Asia Communications & Marketing team oversees and is responsible for delivering the region’s communications, marketing, visits and events functions, supporting the delivery of DBT South Asia’s Regional Plan. 

The Communications, Marketing, Visits & Events team works pan-India with a remit extending to the wider South Asia region. The team works closely with His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC), senior leadership and all delivery focused colleagues. 

The team also works closely with the DBT HQ marketing/communications team, with the DBT marketing/communications global hub in Hong Kong, and here in India with cross-mission colleagues which includes Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Science and Innovation, Economics, Visit Britain, British Council and the devolved administrations. 

The team frequently supports high profile activity – including incoming Ministerial visits, cross mission engagements, major moments in the DBT calendar, major GREAT activations, as well as the launch of new campaigns.

Role Profile

We are looking for a candidate who is a dynamic and creative self-starter, a true marketer, with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage the varied (sometimes competing) needs of many stakeholders in varied locations. 

The candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing and executing strategic marketing plans for the department’s trade and investment teams helping them attract potential businesses and leads but also help retain existing ones.

While the marketing department looks to Marketing Managers for guidance and direction, executives and teams will be counting on you for tangible business leads and results. You will primarily act as an advisor to DBT sector teams, providing advice and support, helping colleagues deliver their sector targets/objectives where communications/marketing has a role, and providing ‘hands on’ support. You will be working in corporate environment as part of a larger marketing, creative, communications or digital team.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve

Integrated marketing (60%)

  • Create, validate, plan and deliver a strategy for the DBT South Asia region aligned with trade & investment targets.
  • Develop OASIS framework i.e. Objective (O), Audience (A), Strategy (S), Implementation (A), and Scoring (S) with a strategic focus on lead generation for key sectors.
  • Project management for day-to-day marketing and events activity that sector teams are involved with.
  • Support business planning, especially where marketing spend is involved. The role advises sector teams on how marketing and communications can (and cannot!) support the delivery of sectoral objectives.
  • Oversees a range of event-based activity (including production), ensuring that public funds are being allocated towards activity that is genuinely going to achieve cut-through and results.
  • Support cross-mission activity, this includes UK national days, incoming VVIP visits, crisis communication planning, and the delivery of GREAT (trade/investment focused) activity.
  • Support the in-country activation and cascade of HQ-led campaigns and initiatives.
  • Work closely with the design and brand team on creation of creative marketing collaterals to deliver policy/ messaging.
  • You will work closely with the Head of Marketing and Campaigns for India and with the wider team of communications and marketing professionals across the India network and beyond.
  • An expectation to take on a corporate responsibility in one of the BDHC’s cross-mission teams (for example, we have committees including: Welfare; Health & Safety; Learning & Development, etc).

Finance and budget management (20%)

  • You will be responsible for helping to administer and oversee DBT’s regional marketing budget, working in close collaboration with DBT’s sector teams and the Chief Operating Officer’s office. You will regularly review marketing spend and ensure that colleagues are seeking cost effective ways to advance their marketing objectives.
  • You will evaluate and produce accurate reports of progress against milestones, expenditure, and return on investment for key activations.
  • You will design and develop creative communication and marketing products – presentations, briefings, etc. that will maximise DBT’s message, support programme objectives and contribute to sector targets.

Stakeholder engagement and management (20%)

  • You will be the key point of contact for DBT marketing and business planning for sector teams in your region and will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely information flows between the various stakeholders in one of DBT’s largest overseas networks
  • You will have responsibility for identifying and engaging with sponsors and partners (monetary and in-kind).
  • You will manage empanelled agencies, including procurement, evaluation and performance management.
  • You will manage vendor relationships, especially hotels and other key venues used by the network.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
The jobholder will be able to access a wide range of English language online and face-to-face training delivered for the UK government overseas. You will have opportunities to access specialist training for government communicators. You will be allocated a dedicated learning and development budget each financial year to support your continuous development.

Working patterns:
Yes, the Network allows you to work from home for one day per week. So, one day within a five-day working week can be spent at home (if desired), while the other four must be spent in the office, travelling for work, or in meetings outside the office.

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a reputed University/College
  • At least 5 years in a professional marketing and campaigns role (long term as well as short term)
  • Proven record as a senior marketing manager with a strong track record of delivering high-quality marketing external facing events and campaigns.
  • At least 5 years’ experience of managing third-party external vendors and empanelled agencies. This includes a strong-track record of procuring, evaluating and performance managing said parties and ensuring that UK public funds are well spent and that value for money is prioritised.
  • Creative flair, an ability to spot opportunities and turn ideas into compelling marketing outputs that deliver tangible outcomes (e.g. positive perception change/ lead gen from our target audience).
  • Fluency in the use of traditional and emerging marketing tools and channels (lead gen campaigns, paid channels and platforms); understanding of emerging industry trends.
  • Excellent problem-solving and strategic thinking skills.
  • Budget-management skills and proficiency.
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively.
  • Analytical skills to forecast and identify trends and challenges.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Understanding of international marketing and event management principles.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment.
  • Excellent English language skills enabling you to draft high quality content for communications and marketing purposes
