The British Embassy in Oslo is part of the United Kingdom's world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Norway. The Embassy is looking for a Guard Supervisor to complement the Security Team.

The main purpose of the job is ensuring the physical security of the Embassy (including that of its staff, visitors and assets), supervision of Security Guard Team and backup IT Security Officer.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

General(80%) 

  • Reception duties, including meeting and greeting visitors, taking switchboard calls from the public, liaising with colleagues about visitors and attendees at meetings and events, managing access control to the offices, handling visitor passes and being the first point of contact for staff and visitors to the Embassy.
  • Reception Guard duties, including staffing metal arch detectors, searching visitor’s bags, providing a security presence in the public reception.
  • Office Guard: Implement day-to-day security measures, including patrols, locking/ un-locking procedures, CCTV monitoring, testing alarms and radios, escorting contractors, security scanning of mail/ post, key-holders for the offices, completing security paperwork and logs.
  • Building Facilities Support: working alongside other Corporate Services staff carrying out shared wider duties across the guard team, to assist with office facilities support including: Health & Safety measures at post, notices and general administration/ paperwork; fire drills, extinguishers, first aid kits, equipment, security signage, key-holder and lock duties, helping manage the mailroom.
  • Duties include patrolling the Embassy compound and its perimeter, carrying out security checks of personnel and vehicles entering the Embassy compound.

Team Leader: (15%) 

  • Guard supervision, management of guard house and patrol routines (2x Security Guards), Performance management of guards and writing annual assessments for the Guard team.

Back-up IT Support Officer: (5%) 

  • Back-up for IT Security Officer when absent, and to provide additional assistance if exceptional IT circumstances require it.  
  • Other ad hoc tasks as directed by Security Manager and Corporate Service Managers.

Essential skills:

  • Demonstrated work experience in security/law enforcement/military.
  • Excellent people engagement skills and first-rate customer service.
  • Experience of working public reception in an office environment.
  • A high degree of professionalism and strong ability to represent the UK government externally to visitors and other members of the public.
  • Adaptable, flexible and energetic; ability to work well in a team and to work collaboratively to deliver shared tasks and support others in the team.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English C level.
  • IT experience, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Teams, Outlook.

Desirable:

Basic proficiency in spoken and written Norwegian would be considered an advantage.

This is a full-time permanent position, five working days (currently 35 hours net) per week. Working patterns: this position will cover only Monday – Friday, between  08:00 – 17:30 with possible shift to support and extra events.

Ability to work extra hours for events when required.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
