The British Embassy in Athens is part of a world-wide network, representing a wide range of British interests overseas from political, through Economic, consular and Law Enforcement. The Embassy is now looking for an Economic Officer. 

Main purpose of job:

You will work as part of the British Embassy’s political team to provide analysis and expertise on key issues relating to the Greek economy and political economy. Current priority issues include the Greek Government’s economic reform agenda / ‘Greece 2.0’, the energy crisis, and sanctions policy. However most important is an ability and interest in deploying your research and analytical skills flexibly across a wide range of issues as they arise.

Your work will involve research using open source information and through building a network of local contacts, both inside and outside of government. Your expertise will be drawn upon regularly by Embassy colleagues, including the British Ambassador, and your reporting and analysis will inform the wider work of the Embassy and UK Government more broadly. Excellent written and verbal communication in English is therefore a must, as well as an ability to work through large amounts of complex information in both English and Greek.


 

  • Proficiency Greek and English according to CEFR Framework- C1 level *
  • Strong understanding of the Greek economy, economic policy and recent Greek economic history, particularly regarding the Greek debt crisis and the country’s relationship with the European Union.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication: communicating economics clearly and succinctly to senior officials and ministers.
  • Ability to apply analytical skills and use economic insights to understand Greek Government policy and their impacts for the UK.
  • Strong eye for detail and ability to grasp complexity and to summarise concisely for a busy, non-expert audience (in both English and Greek).
  • Networking skills, able to build a wide and diverse network of external contacts.
  • Good team player, willing to flex according to priorities and resourcing requirements.
  •  Able to work to tight deadlines.

This is a permanent contract, where you will be expected to work a maximum of 37.5 hours per week.

The British Embassy offers a competitive remuneration package, 24 days annual leave entitlement (given pro-rata to staff on fixed-term contracts and/or staff working part-time), a training package and flexible working opportunities. Monthly salary for this position is EUR €2482.05 (Gross) currently payable 14 times a year (as per Greek labour law). An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy is subject to terms and conditions service according to Greek employment law. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.

 Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Greece and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
