Main purpose:

To communicate the work, ambition and importance of the UK’s work in Australia through a broad range of channels and activities including marketing, digitial, PR and events. You will work within a small team to deliver effective communications and extend the reach of our messages and audience engagement.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • Work closely with the Head of Communications and wider communications teams to design, deliver and evaluate communications campaigns and activities across a range of communication channels to support the UK’s objectives and work in Australia. This includes promoting Global Britain; Force for Good; COP26 and trade and prosperity.
  • Provide communications support to events and initiatives across the Australia network’s five posts to creatively communicate their work, amplifying their activity and reaching new audiences.
  • Monitor the media for emerging trends and issues, identifying opportunities and risks to the delivery of the British High Commission’s priorities. Support wider high commission to monitor their policy areas through setting up effective searches and social media dashboards.
  • Handle media enquiries confidently and competently drawing on core scripts and escalating as necessary. Rebut inaccuracies and proactively seek opportunities to maximise accurate coverage reflecting the British Government’s viewpoint on key issues and messages
  • Create, edit and post digital and social media content across UKinAustralia channels. Use insight and evaluation to continually improve content, build following and increase engagement.
  • Support the High Commissioner and other high profile visitors on their public and media engagements as necessary with the wider support of the communications team. Consider how these can best meet our communications objectives.
  • Shared responsibility for assisting with administrative tasks for the Communications Team, and other duties when required.
  • Support communications team to evaluate off and online activity. Highlighting and celebrating success and lessons learned – feeding this back into the creation and implementation of future campaigns and activity.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Management of own expenses related to the role.

  • Bachelors degree (or higher)
  • Excellent writing, proofing and editing skills for both traditional and new media
  • Good working knowledge of the Australian digital and traditional media environments and a basic familiarity with the UK system of government and international priorities.
  • A record of communicating with impact, using a range of oral and written formats, in a clear and concise style. Understand how to use of different forms of media, including digital, to reach different audiences.
  • Strong evidence of ability to produce high quality digital communications assets quickly.
  • Familiarity with the way a media communications plan can play a significant role in delivery of policy or service delivery objectives.
  • Ability to build cooperative and productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders regardless of status.
  • Experience with Adobe suite
  • Experience using a website content management system
  • Ability to create rich media content for social media eg: using smart phone for photography, video and editing; creation of infographics/gifs.

This is a fixed-term role until 31 March 2022, with possibility of extension.

This job is available for 4 days a week (0.8 FTE) or for full time applicants. Due to time differences and the nature of the role there will be some calls and work outside core office hours. 

The British High Commission supports flexible and remote working for all its employees. A flexible working culture is encouraged by senior leadership however please note, remote working may not be suitable for all roles or business areas. Any flexible and / or remote working arrangement should be agreed with the employee’s line manager.

Salary is at AU$66,921 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law.

The British Government supports flexible working practices. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses.
