The British Embassy in Dublin is part of a world-wide network, representing UK political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Justice and Home Affairs Officer.

A fascinating job has opened up at the British Embassy for a Justice and Home Affairs Policy Officer. Bilateral co-operation between the UK and Ireland on security, justice and immigration issues is a high priority for the UK. The officer will become a policy expert on these issues, providing advice, writing reports, developing and delivering projects and events, and representing the Embassy with external stakeholders. This will include work on a varied and important range of issues such as serious and organised crime, immigration abuse and online harms. We regularly host high profile visitors including Ministers and members of the Royal Family, which you would work on and in some cases lead.

You will have excellent communication skills which you will use to brief senior colleagues, draft a range of written materials including reports and effectively communicate the UK’s position to external contacts. You will be used to working in a fast-paced environment, and able to work on multiple tasks to deadlines. You will have strong networking skills, and be able to quickly establish and maintain a wide network of relevant contacts within Ireland across government, academia and civil society and with UK officials in departments such as the Home Office, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, and the Ministry of Justice.

Main roles and responsibilities:

  • Provide policy analysis and reporting across a range of Justice and Home Affairs policy portfolios within the British Embassy.

  • Develop a network of contacts across relevant organisations, academia and civil society in Ireland.

  • Work with senior Embassy and UK Government colleagues to shape and deliver policy and engagement strategies. 

  • Organise relevant ministerial, parliamentary and senior official visits to Ireland; delivering the programme with input from various stakeholders.

  • Devise and deliver projects, events and seminars. Deliver existing project plan on Serious and Organised Crime.

  • Engage across the Embassy and with external stakeholders on Justice and Home Affairs matters.

  • Develop initiatives, take proposals forward, and deliver at pace.

  • Represent the Embassy in meetings with Irish Government and stakeholders.

  • Be open and flexible by supporting wider Embassy activity when required, including support on new and emerging policy priorities.

  • Fluency in English both written and spoken (minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*).

  • Strong networking and influencing skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work in an international and inter-cultural context.

  • A self-starter, with the ability to organise self and work effectively.

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively.

  • Adaptability and resilience under pressure, including when juggling multiple competing priorities.

  • Good IT skills, including experience of Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.

  • University degree.

  • Knowledge of UK government and political institutions and processes.

  • Knowledge of Irish government and political institutions and processes.

  • Knowledge of Justice and Home Affairs issues (e.g. policing, immigration, law).

  • Project management experience.

The successful candidate will be subject to a six-month probationary period and will be employed on a fixed-term contract basis for two years with the possibility of renewal. The appointment is subject to satisfactory reference and security checks.

 All L&D required on FCDO/UK government standards and systems will be provided.
