Main Purpose of Job:
Working in the Defence and Security Export (DSE) Team within the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Japan, we cover 5 sectors: Defence, Security, Cyber, Space and Aerospace. The successful applicant will be expected to provide admin support, trade advice and market research to promote and support UK companies looking to export to Japan and/or work in collaboration/partnership with Japanese industries within our sectors. This role will be expected to assist with project management of trade campaigns and events, stakeholder management in both public and private sectors, research and awareness of industry trends, direct advice to UK companies and other parts of UK Government.
What will the Jobholder be Expected to Achieve:
Working with the Section Head and Senior Trade Advisor, you will provide support for a wide range of trade promotion activities including:
- Key events (Defence and Security Equipment International (Japan and UK)
- Farnborough International Airshow and Japan International Aerospace
- Trade missions
- Business matching events
- Seminars and income generation events
You will develop an understanding of defence, security, cyber, space and civil aerospace sectors, in order to support senior team members and provide advice to UK companies. You will support the development of a pipeline of opportunities and managing key contacts in both industry and government such as the Japanese Ministry of Defence, Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), Japan Self Defence Force (JSDF) and Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI). There may be opportunities to travel to the UK.
Provide administrative support to the wider DSE team for day-to-day team administration including procurement, recording activities onto a Customer Relationship Management data base, events and exhibitions and translation and interpretation.
Contribute to the wider work of the Embassy in support of the UK Government Country Plan, including corporate committees; Embassy wide events, inward senior visits as required and taking an active role in the Japan Network Crisis Response Plan and crisis exercises.

- Good IT office skills (especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Language Requirements:
- Japanese and English
- Level of language required: Fluency in Japanese due to translation requirements and good business English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 875 points or above or equivalent)
- Previous experience working in/with industry or Japanese Government
- Degree in the following subjects: business, space, cyber, international relations and politics
- Event organisation experience
- 1 month salary bonus equivalents payable in June and December
(Note: Salary may be reduced due to tax status) - Commuting allowance of up to JPY35,000 per month (paid on an actual cost basis)
- 25 days paid annual leave (calculated pro rata)
- Health Insurance and Employee pension (kenko hoken/kosei nenkin)
- Employment Insurance (koyou hoken).
Working Patterns:
The British Embassy Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working. This role allows for flexibility in start and end times and working from home 1 day a week, subject to the needs of the team and agreement with your line manager.

Learning and Development Opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
Three key areas of focus will be:
- Building up a sound understanding of the DSE Team key sectors of the DSE Teams. On the job training, presentations from sector specialists and Developing Sector Knowledge course and mentoring support.
- Building up influencing and sales skills through on the job training and DBT run courses, such as Effective Account Management or Consultancy Based Sales training courses would be useful.
- Developing knowledge of the UK Government system through on-the-job training, online courses and interaction with other parts of the Embassy and HMG Departments.
