The British Consulate-General, Dusseldorf is looking for a Trade Adviser to join its Department for International Trade (DIT) team on a 9 months fixed-term contract, to support the work of a new Europe enquiry hub. The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build demand for British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK. DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed. The DIT team in Germany comprises some 40 staff working in Berlin, Düsseldorf & Munich. This position will be based in Düsseldorf. The team works with both German investors and British companies doing business in Germany across the main business sectors of the economy. For more information about DIT please follow the link.

The new position will work closely with Europe’s regional enquiry hub based in Prague and with DIT’s export support network in the UK to help high potential British exporters to win business in Germany. A core element of the role will be to deliver practical support to those companies, including information on market potential, in-market representation and clients. The job holder will also work proactively to identify and to communicate high value opportunities to business; and will support DIT’s promotional programme in Germany and the UK.

In parallel, the job holder will seek to expand networks of commercial partners in Germany, including private sector providers of commercial services. As with all DIT positions, there will be a focus on working collaboratively with colleagues across the Germany Network team to maximise opportunities for the UK. The work will be varied and demanding and the successful candidate will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter, able to juggle priorities and to work on demanding timelines.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Europe enquiry hub in delivering commercial services, guidance, information and support to high potential British exporters – including innovative small companies, entrepreneurs and MSBs, in coordination with DIT Germany Export Growth team colleagues;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Europe to ensure a comprehensive and joined-up approach that maximises the returns for high potential exporters – using success in one European market as a springboard to success in another;
  • Help to build in-market networks and partnerships able to provide commercial services, guidance, information and support alongside DIT teams;
  • Help to create and maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships with DIT’s export support network in the UK to identify, target and engage a pipeline of high potential clients. Contribute to efforts to communicate opportunities in the European market through support for an imaginative regional promotional programme.

  • Fluent written and spoken English and German (minimum level required C2 under the CEFRL*);
  • Great IT skills, especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel, are needed;
  • Excellent communication skills to work well with commercial clients, external contacts and a wide and diverse Germany team.
  • Previous commercial experience would be useful;
  • Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery have been thought through carefully;
  • Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided;
  • Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team;
  • Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.
