The British Embassy in Vienna is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Security Officer to join its team.

The applicant will be working as part of an established and capable team to ensure the safety and security of staff and families at the British Embassy Vienna. The applicant must have strong communication skills and the ability to give clear, concise advice on a range of security topics, commensurate with their position, as per policy and procedure.

Main Responsibilities will include:

To carry out security duties at the British Embassy Vienna, working as a team member, including:

  • Working as part of a team the candidate will be responsible for security checks, including physical searches of personnel and vehicles. Monitoring of CCTV, Operating VHF radio network, responding to alarms, patrolling on foot, escorting visitors and associated security tasks as directed by the PSOM and ROSM
  • Dealing with staff, visitors and members of the public in a professional and courteous manner
  • Scan and sort incoming mail and deliveries
  • Maintain various records and security logs
  • Reacting to incidents and issues in a calm, disciplined manner as part of a team, including exercises and learning and development to understand policy and procedures

On occasion there may be a requirement to support the embassy transport team so a valid (Cat B) driving licence is required.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Promote and adhere to Embassy policy, procedure and legislation, including but not limited to aspects relating to health and safety.
  • Other tasks as requested by the PSOM/ROSM

L&D:

  • Internal security training. External provider and GLO training in security operations

Our ideal candidate shows:

  • Proficient English and German (both written and spoken, minimum C1 Level for CEFR framework*)
  • Can work as an individual and within a team.
  • Knowledge of physical security barriers, policy and procedures.
  • Computer literate (especially in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Hold a valid B category driving licence

It will be a plus:

  • Previous experience in uniformed services, commercial security or customer focussed industry background with checkable references

This is a Country Based Staff position in the British Embassy Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.

This is a full-time (35 hours per week) permanent contract. Working hours are 5 days a week working from 09:00 to 17:00 and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. On occasion there may be support needed for events in the evening. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.

The monthly salary will be € 2,012 gross, payable 14 times a year. Please note that UK nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Austrian (UK) tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process. All other nationals will receive paid their salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary pending EU Exit. If requirements change additional eligibility information will be shared during the recruitment process.
