The British Embassy in Berlin is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Trade Adviser, Consumer and Retail to be part of the Department for International Trade Team (DIT).

The successful candidate will contribute to the wider objectives of the British Government’s Germany network and support the Embassy’s positive working environment.

The Trade Adviser will assist the Senior Trade Adviser in supporting British Businesses to increase exports of goods and services as well as overseas direct investment to Germany. The post holder will mainly work with companies from the consumer goods and retail sector. A key element of the work will involve looking for specific opportunities for UK companies to sell goods and services to Germany.

The Trade Adviser will be adept at building and maintaining strong network contacts at buyers and C-level in order to develop enduring and successful commercial partnerships between Germany and British interests. He/she will identify and actively target German key account customers in the Consumer and Retail sectors. He/she will manage projects, give advice and assistance to UK clients and will take over administrative tasks for the team. Furthermore, the role involves supporting the team in strategy development and implementation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To carry out market research;
  • To identify and contact potential business contacts;
  • To compile detailed research reports;
  • To assist the Senior Trade Adviser as directed;
  • To attend trade fairs and other promotional events;
  • To undertake other duties that may reasonably be required and which are in accordance with the grading and core competencies of the job;
  • Administrative tasks.


  • Fluent in German and English, both oral and written;
  • Good knowledge of the German and UK Business Environments specifically with a sound understanding and knowledge of German supply chains in the field of the above sectors and their links to key accounts;
  • Strong strategic thinking with track record and success in this area. Holding a sound knowledge of the consumer and retail sector landscape, trends and developments, policy, regulation and commercial drivers in the UK and Germany;
  • Strong personal impact; able to convincingly engage German buyers and possible partners;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent project management and prioritisation skills;
  • Strong key account management experience and experience in working across complex matrix virtual teams;
  • Ability to research and analyse complex information;
  • Self-starter – ability to work well on own initiative;
  • Proficient IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

  • Experience in the German and/or UK Consumer and Retail Market;
  • Sound knowledge of German market sector leaders and connected supply chains;
  • Experience of Customer Relationship Management software.

This is a full-time position of five working days 37.5 hours net (excluding unpaid breaks) per week, for an initial contract period of 24 months.

Some flexible working may be possible, subject to German labour law and the operational needs of the role.
