Background

The Department for International Trade (DIT) in Latin America & the Caribbean (LATAC) secures UK and LATAC prosperity by promoting international trade and investment, and championing free trade across the region. We want the UK to be LATAC´s business partner of choice. DIT LATAC supports UK businesses and Latin America & Caribbean buyers, to increase trade and investment flows between the UK and LATAC.

DIT LATAC is seeking a Communications Manager to deliver communications in Brazil and across the region. Managed by the Deputy Head of Communications for DIT LATAC and working closely with the Head of Communications in Brazil, the ideal candidate will be an energetic team player with proven experience of delivering high calibre commercially-focused communications campaigns, while working in a fast-paced environment, responding rapidly to shifting demands, and with a good understanding of the UK and Brazilian political and economic scenario. This position is within a team responsible for:

·       Explaining and championing Britain to Brazilian and Latin American (regionally as well as individual countries) commercial audiences through media relations, digital outreach, events, marketing campaigns and strategic communications, including the award winning GREAT Britain campaign.

·       Working with colleagues to contribute to the raising of awareness and informing of perceptions in the UK about doing business in Brazil and LATAC.

·       DIT focuses on trade policy, promotion, and trade & investment support for companies. This means a lot of contact with government and the private sector, primarily in Brazil and Latin America, but also at times in the UK. Major sectors for the UK in Latin America include: Energy, Life Sciences, Financial Services, Infrastructure and Education.

 

The position requires availability to travel and full proficiency in both Portuguese and English (including effective presentation skills and proof reading).

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

 

We’re looking for a Communications professional who will:

·       Support the planning and execution of a regional DIT LATAC Communications plan by proactively identifying traditional media and digital communications opportunities for HMTC and senior management across LATAC;

·       Support the development of high impact and lead generating activities based on Regional Trade Plan (covering 19 markets as appropriate), ensuring a sector-based approach, through innovative channels and tools (owned and new), and measuring and reporting key metrics for optimal Communications delivery;

·       Build relationships with a region-wide network and work closely with Communication teams throughout LATAC to implement and deliver on the DIT LATAC Communications objectives;

·       Be the main Public Relations and Social Media lead for DIT in Brazil, supporting country Head of Comms and working in partnership with in-country FCDO Comms colleagues to deliver a yearly Communications Plan based on the Brazil Country Trade Plan and its priority sectors, such as Energy & Renewables, AgriTech, Education and Infrastructure; Lead on promotion of events to promote the UK in Brazil, including thinking creatively on photo opportunities, digital, branding and other activities, in close liaison with sector teams;

·       Ensure the dissemination of Brazil-led activity to other markets in LATAC and promote optimal impact of DIT Comms work;

·       Be responsible for copywriting of press releases, articles, thought leadership pieces, social media editorial for UK in Brazil as well as regional digital platforms, content creation such as video scripts, and internal communications when appropriate;

·       Report results on projects, based on Key Performance Indicators and against clear Comms objectives, aligned with the team´s monthly, quarterly and yearly results reports.

·       Be an active member of the staff, participating in meetings and setting corporate objective(s) to contribute to the internal agenda;

·       Work proactively on forming new relationships and contacts with an eye to increasing UK engagement and influence through traditional and digital medias; contacting and doing follow ups with journalists (national and international;

·       Deal with administrative tasks, including contact with suppliers and financial management.

 

The ideal candidate:

·       Is comfortable with planning, designing and delivering high profile media engagement strategies and reputation management plans, across a number of markets and industries.

·       Is highly knowledgeable about the various traditional and modern communication channels, with a strong focus on digital communications

·       Has experience in leading a team, preferably of diverse nature and in an international and commercial environment.

·       Has a strong interest in international relations

·       Has a proven track-record in the delivery of high impact, innovative and strategic communications.

·       Has a good understanding of Brazilian media (mandatory).

 

Moreover, they should have excellent interpersonal communication skills, management skills, autonomy, and good attention to detail and be a strong team-player. Confident, able to form effective relationships quickly both within and outside the organisation and be confident in dealing with a range of contacts at all levels.

 

The job requires flexibility, commitment, confidentiality, willingness and ability to deal with multiple tasks.

 

Essential on arrival:

The ideal candidate has experience with working in an international, open and diverse environment, and/or private sector experience such as in marketing and communications agencies or marketing and communications departments (preferably within a Latin America context). Public-sector experience/knowledge is a plus.

Other essential qualifications, skills and experience should include:  

§     At least five years professional experience in media, communications or PR

§     A university degree in Public relations, Marketing, International Relations, or similar. Masters Degree is a plus;

§     Strong copywriting skills and experience of writing press notices and other written materials (in both English and Portuguese);

§     Proven digital and social media skills;

§     Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including stakeholder engagement skills to build relationships and credibility with colleagues;

§     Experience of engaging with the press and securing interview slots and other media opportunities;

§     Experience of planning and implementing strategic communications campaigns;

§     Excellent organisational and self-management skills to respond effectively to tight deadlines;

§     Sound knowledge of MS Office and project management tools;

§     The ability to learn quickly and work with a high degree of autonomy;

§     A positive “can-do” attitude that can see a way through challenges;

§     Strong editorial judgment and ability to communicate effectively with different audiences;
