Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Bangkok is part of a world-wide network of 230 Posts, representing British political, economic, Visa and Consular interests overseas.

We are currently recruiting a driver, who will provide reliable and courteous transportation services to staff members of the British Embassy Bangkok and its official visitors.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

VEHICLE MAINTENANCE

  • Check water, gas, oil and mechanical conditions before starting each journey
  • Fuel the assigned vehicle(s)
  • Maintain the official vehicle(s) in a clean condition inside and outside
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records on trip sheets, customer transportation forms, vehicle maintenance, fuel purchases, incident reports, accident reports, vehicle conditions reports and other records that are requested from management
  • Report defects or problems with vehicles to supervisors
  • Perform minor vehicle repairs and maintenance
  • Interpret policies and procedures, maps and route directions
  • Ensure vehicles are serviced on time and schedule vehicle servicing in consultation with the Network Security Manager
  • Keep the assigned vehicles(s) clean both inside and outside
  • Maintain defensive driving

COMMUNICATION

  • Present safety briefings to passengers before each trip
  • Assist passengers, including any with disabilities, in and out of the vehicles, operating ramps, lifts and security devices as required
  • Read and interpret maps and driving directions in English to plan the most efficient route service for customers
  • Report delays and accidents
  • Respond immediately to accidents or medical emergencies by notifying emergency response providers and rendering First Aid until emergency personnel arrive
  • Communicate and coordinate with the Corporate Services Team and Transport Manager
  • Participate in crisis exercises and assist as required in responding to any crisis
  • Commit to Learning and Development opportunities offered as part of the Embassy’s Learning and Development programme which provides five days of learning a year
  • Support the Embassy team in any Crisis response work
  • Must have a current Thai driving licence
  • Training in highway safety rules and regulations
  • Able to communicate effectively in English and Thai
  • Willingness and ability to work flexibly and be prepared to work out of office hours
  • Knowledge about vehicle parts and maintenance

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

The British Embassy Bangkok encourages all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training (courses) and informal (job-shadowing, coaching, on-the-job training etc.). The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCO resources. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring. All staff are eligible for 5 L&D days a year. The successful candidate will attend professional driving training.

Working patterns:

The successful candidate will work for an average of 38.5 hours per week. However, given the nature of this job, occasional weekend work or work outside of normal office hours, usually at night is expected. Overtime is paid for all out of hours work. The normal working day starts at 0730 and finishes at 1630 from Monday – Thursday and finishes at 1300 on Friday.

Other conditions:

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff who are locally recruited by the British Embassy are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.

All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit.
