Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade and investment across the world, we support UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. DIT has over 3,000 staff globally in over 100 countries.

As DIT enters a critical new phase in India, you will play a leading role in devising and delivering DIT’s marketing activities and activations in India under the world’s most recognised country brand, the GREAT Britain and Northern campaign.

DIT globally is divided into 9 regions, each led by a Trade Commissioner. DIT South Asia is led from Mumbai by Alan Gemmell OBE. This role will be based in Mumbai.

You will play a leading role in transforming our marketing operation in India, reporting to DIT South Asia’s Head of Communications, Marketing, Visits and Events. You will be part of the Senior comms and marketing team for the region, working closely with your counterpart (who leads on Press and Communications, based in Delhi).

Your remit will be to work across teams and the DIT network in India and the wider South Asia region, to promote British businesses to Indian buyers and to promote the UK as India’s overseas investment destination of choice. Approximately 80% of your time will be India focused with the remaining 20% supporting activity in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Maldives.

You will need to be a confident self-starter, adept at working with colleagues in multiple locations as your activities will span India, the wider region, UK government departments and teams. We are looking for candidates who thrive in an international and cross-cultural marketing context – and are able to engage others in their work collaboratively. 

This is an exciting, high profile role: it will be varied and impactful. India is a priority market for the UK (with both countries currently in talks on a bilateral free trade agreement), and exposure to VIP visitors is high.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

You will combine marketing, campaigns and events experience with strong project management, leadership and people management skills. You will be creative, impactful and outcome focussed – able to understand the context in India and the wider region and be confident in transforming the vision of the DIT South Asia network into compelling and coherent strategic marketing, campaigns and events activations for the Network. You will be digitally savvy and bring strong creativity to the role.

The successful candidate will work closely with DIT’s Communication and Marketing directorate in the headquarters in the UK, DIT’s international network of marketing and communications professionals, DIT India’s marketing and events team, the India network Press and Communications Group and DIT India sectoral trade and investment colleagues throughout to help devise, deliver and evaluate DIT’s marketing campaigns and activities across India.

You will:

  • Provide strategic marketing expertise across events, campaigns, project management, messaging, advertising, paid media, email marketing, brand and digital for DIT South Asia. You will lead on our government-to-business (G2B) and business-to-business (B2B) sectoral marketing and ensure that your strategic marketing plans result in lead generation for UK exporters (including Overseas Direct Investment – ODI), investment lead generation, and relevant economics and prosperity work
  • Commission and use insight to develop evidence-based marketing strategies
  • Have strong team management and resource planning responsibilities  
  • Mentor and develop talent within the team
  • Have strong stakeholder engagement skills, working closely with channel partners, including sponsors, UK and South Asian companies, as well as visiting VIPs, both governmental and from the private sector
  • Plan and deliver agreed strategic marketing and events activations and activities including event organisation and management, writing briefs for advertising and media buys, procurement, working with our empanelled agencies to deliver activity (event, digital, PR etc) and content for sectoral marketing e.g. microsite/landing pages on great.gov.uk, digital products, branded print products, LinkedIn etc.)
  • Work closely with your opposite number (also a C5 position) which leads on Press & Comms, in Delhi, to drive a one-team, collaborative model
  • Develop, execute and evaluate DIT India marketing and events strategic plans
  • Work with the diplomatic mission and HQ teams to oversee the development of sectoral marketing plans, including toolkits, for key DIT sectors such as healthcare, life sciences, financial services, creative and sports – ensuring that these are guided by India relevant insight and evidence
  • Work closely with India’s sector teams to ensure that their marketing activities are customised, thoroughly evaluated and providing value for money. Your plans must be designed to unlock individual business/investment opportunities for the UK and to help promote British businesses to relevant Indian stakeholders and audiences
  • Direct our brand and design teams to produce strategic marketing products which are dynamic, relevant to our audiences in India and the wider South Asia region and which adhere to UK government brand guidelines
  • Liaise with cross-country teams on collaborative projects, collating relevant DIT top lines and statistics to be used in marketing products
  • Assure the quality of all marketing outputs (including but not limited to proofreading print, digital and other online and offline media in English), and implement a methodology to monitor, report and drive up impact
  • Develop a strong and complementary working relationship with colleagues from across the region who often provide support to your team e.g. the India network’s Press and Communications Group
  • Working with the DIT Head of Communication and Marketing for South Asia, take responsibility for India’s marketing budgets, devising and overseeing the process of allocating marketing funds to teams in India – you will be accountable to ensure that this is spent in accordance with best practice in Governmental communications e.g. that marketing bids from teams follow the UK’s OASIS format and that deliver maximum value and return for the taxpayer.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):     

You will be responsible for a team of 4x and you will directly manage 1x marketing manager and 1x graphic designer. You will be responsible for counter-signing a number of other staff.

Essential on arrival:

  • 5-7 years or relevant experience 
  • Experience of working in a marketing and communications field
  • Experience of leading a marketing and/or events team
  • Strong project management, leadership and people management skills
  • Willingness to travel both within India and internationally
  • Excellent communication skills (you may be tested)
  • Experience of b2b marketing, engaging business audiences first and foremost.

Desirable: 

  • Experience of working cross-culturally, in an international organisation and context
  • A good understanding of trade and investment and policy implications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including working with senior stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of digital channels and key trends relevant to your work.
